You nailed it..... That's a great point. My response will be pen welds, take or live it. I don't think the contractor has ever used pre-tensioned bolts...
It is a W flange.
Pen welds will do but I have the feeling that the contractor would prefer bolting the exiting column base plate to a cap plate of the little stub column.
Hi,
The contractor is having an issue on a project that I engineered and submitted an RFI.
Basically, he set the top of pier 6" lower than what is in the construction documents. Now the columns that the steel company shipped to the site are all 6" shorter.
They are asking if they can splice a...
RFreund,
That's right....I just did the massprop as well and it matches.
My curtain walls are 13' so i hope these sizes work. If it doesn't I will add aluminum C channel or something for reinforcement.
@Glass,
Great info. thanks.....
Yes 3 weeks, lol...I thought I could access the manufacturer catalog when I wrote the proposal.
I clicked on the link you sent and they only have few types (162001, 162002, 1620090 vertical mullions). I hope these types work with the wind my design.
Thanks a bunch.
Then it's serious.
if they manufacture something and want Architects to specify them then they should have catalogs where engineers will get the data just like Verco, Vulcraft, etc.....
At the end of the day, the products will be shipped from their warehouses, so i don't see the issue.
Is it...
@RFreund,
Thanks for the information.
I got a signed proposal this morning for my first project and I am in the same boat as you.
The specs from the Architect calls for Kawneer product.
I went to their webiste for information. However, I don't think they have all the shape they use to...
@ glass99,
Do you gave any suggestion for any software out there?
You know how it works; once you do do couple designs with the right manual you get it. I would like to start my practice in specialty structural engineering like connection design, light gauge curtain wall design, certified...
Thanks Ron... I use SteelSmart for metal stud or light gauge curtain wall design.
However I am looking for a software for aluminum curtain wall and storefront system, capable of designing mullions, and coming up with shop drawings.
Hi there,
Lately I have been getting calls from contractors to design curtain walls and storefront systems for them So I am thinking to start my practice in the area.
Is there a good software out there for this?
Thanks.
KootK, you are absolutely right. SPEED is always a big factor with O&G firms. matter of fact the client pulled this project from another company this morning and they want us to issue construction drawings of 7 structures by Friday.
Elevated steel platform is an option but I prefer concrete...
Taking in account all the above comments, I think I will use and design for the following:
- Perimeter grade beams about 3'-0" deep
- Void form under the 24" thick concrete block.
- Drilled piers to support the perimeter grade beams.
Why this approach? Because, if the void form rots under the...
Thanks KootK.
So basically I need to design drilled piers or helical piers to resist the tensile force due to the Frost Heave forces under my 24" bloc foundation.
Thanks.
hello,
I am designing a block foundation for outdoor compressor and H-pumps for Oil companies in North Dakota.
My analysis gives me about 24" thick block foundation (24" thick x 7'-0" wide x 40'-0" long). Do I need to consider the 6'-6" frost depth for this 24" thick block foundation?
We do a...
Agreed "dhengr". I will be working on two new office buildings in the next 3 months. I think I will go this route and explain the advantages of using composite floors.
This current project goes out at the end of the month, so i will use non-composite for it in the meantime.
Thank you all with your comments.
The building I am talking is 3-story office building, each floor has about 6,000 sq.ft. Since the contractors that always work on our projects have never seen us designed composite floor systems, I think i would rather use the composite deck on steel beams. With...
Thank you all.
I have designed composite floor system in the past (some 15 years ago in Houston-Austin area) before I joined this small local firm (in a small city in Wyoming). The contractors here always ask us to find alternatives to our design to fit their knowledge, which is fine with me...
