Design of gusset supports around agitator nozzle

We are looking at designing a pressure vessel that has a center mounted agitator on the top head. Can anyone point us in the right direction for how to design the repad and support gussets for the agitator. We have had vessels in the past which did not have proper supports of the agitators and...

    passivation of new piping

Ahh Mr. Jones, if it had been the construction contractor who had left the water in the pipe, I would not be going to bat for them. It was however our own commissioning team who left the water in the pipe. I'm not trying to really protect anyone, but I didn't want to see any blame assigned...

    passivation of new piping

Yes Mr. Jones, it is indeed the same project. We have reviewed the specs with PDO personnel and have all agreed that in this application, there was no need for internal passivation and it was not part of the agreed upon method statements. We're just trying to do a little damage control for the...

    passivation of new piping

I guess a little background would be warranted based on the answer by Mr. Jones. We are building a polymer injection facility to inject polymer and water into existing oil wells. So, the piping we built was for a water and polymer mixture. Neither the water or polymer should be corrosive. So...

    passivation of new piping

Gentlemen, I have a very simple question. Traditionally, when constructing a piping system made of stainless steel (316L in this application), is the internal side of the piping passivated before use. I know that the outside of the pipe is to be pickled and passivated, but should the inside...

UT in lieu of RT question

Hi again. Just to follow up, we finally got approval to do the UT on the tanks in Afghanistan as discussed. The job went without a hitch and everyone was happy. We are now looking at some other tanks that are much thinner in nominal thickness (6mm = .236"). We convinced our client that since...

UT in lieu of RT question

That's a good point. The design does not stipulate a joint efficiency, but it does state that "tanks must have 100% full penetration" and that "all welds must be 100% free of slag, undercut or other defects". That almost sounds like they are specifying a JE of 1.0.

UT in lieu of RT question

Thanks BB, I know exactly what you're referring to as we used x-ray in a similar set up on projects all over the world. I think it's more of a stigma working in Afghanistan and trying to bring equipment into that country. I had to pay $4,000 in duties last year just to bring a UT scope into...

UT in lieu of RT question

It is only gamma ray that is not allowed. The problem with x-ray tubes is that we can not find a company willing to do field work with their equipment. Cost is another factor, the one company in the US who would do it wanted more for the x-ray than the tanks cost. The tanks are 90' diameter...

UT in lieu of RT question

Thank you guys for the response. We have found a company in Dubai who can perform the UT on these tanks. They are reputable and have procedures specifically for performing UT on tanks. Because Afghani laws prohibit performing gamma ray radiography, we are somewhat limited in what we have to...

UT in lieu of RT question

API-650 4.2.1.2.3 allows a reduction of .01” (presumably for mill tolerance considerations) for newly purchased shell plate material. Appendix U states that ultrasonic testing can not be done in lieu of radiography for materials less than .375” in nominal thickness. Provided that the minimum...

    Warehouse ventilation requirements

Thank you in advance for any information regarding this question. I work for a chemical manufacturer in coastal Georgia. We are designing a large (200,000 sq.ft.) warehouse that will be used to store pallets of chemicals. Our concern is the ventialtion requirememnts of the warehouse due to...
