I've used both softdesk and InRoads. I think InRoads is a little easier to use. After you run your templates to create your proposed surface you can easily calculate the volumes of earthwork. You have to be careful and understand what information you are given by the program before publishing...
Another advantage of the current version of InRoads is that it can be used with either AutoCad or Microstation. I've used both InRoads and Softdesk and prefer to use InRoads.
