    Balancing a Scotch Yoke

My thread (thread404-121776) which I posted in the Mechanical Engineering Other Topics Forum details a problem I am having trying to smooth the output from a Variable Scotch Yoke. I probably should have posted it here. There is quite a lot of detail involved and replies to other contributors...

    Big clumsy cam followers-2nd attempt

As promised here are some additional pieces of information to clarify some points raised: The IC engine in this particular case will be 2litre but this may vary so I would like a design that will be flexible. The traction conditions will not be such that speed/torque variations can be absorbed...

    Big clumsy cam followers-2nd attempt

Thanks all for the replies, I'll reply in more detail in a day or so when I've had a chance to study them in detail.

    Big clumsy cam followers-2nd attempt

My recent thread (404-120198) outlined a design problem I have been unable to solve. OK Folks, I have been thinking and will now try once again and "look outside the box" as you correctly sugest. I am trying to use a Scotch Yoke as a mechanism to vary the output speed from a constantly...

Big Clumsy Cam Followers don't work for me

zekeman, I have not had a chance to look at the book you suggest yet but the Scotch Yoke I am working with needs to be variable - the length of stroke needs to be adjustable. I have considered introducing a cam like slot in the yoke but this will only work if the length of stroke remained fixed...

Big Clumsy Cam Followers don't work for me

Thanks for the reply zekeman. I am trying to obtain a uniform rate of motion of the reciprocating yoke of a Variable Scotch Yoke Mechanism(obviously the yoke will not have uniform velocity as it is has to stop and reverse direction at its limits). I have spent a huge amount of time trying to...

Big Clumsy Cam Followers don't work for me

Thanks for the reply aamoroso, but yes the loads will be substantial and I would have thought it would have to be borne by a mechanical bearing of sorts. I will check out your suggestion anyway. Any further replies from anyone would be most welcome.

Big Clumsy Cam Followers don't work for me

I am working on a design involving a cam and follower. The nearest approximation of the shape of the cam is an ellipse and the follower continuously rotates around the inside of this ellipse (it is an internal cam). The problem I have is that there is very little space to accommodate the...
