    Transmission tower analysis/design

All, Thank you for the clarifications. We are refining our model.

    Transmission tower analysis/design

We are analyzing the existing condition of an existing transmission tower having long (30 ft plus) L2x2x1/4" braces. We have calculated the wind and ice loads per ASCE 7 and built a Finite Element model of the tower. we applied the wind loads and the ice loads to each individual member including...

    Isolated concrete pier footings allowed?

I thought I read some time ago that pier foundations in a seismic design category D had to be linked together with grade beams. That is, an individual pier system to support a structure was not allowed. Is this familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance.

    horizontal force factor

Hello. We are designing seismic restraints for a sprinkling system and are using NFPA 13, 1996 as the specified code. The seismic force is generated by the weight of the water filled pipe. Using ASCE 7-05 (another project specified code) from section 13.3 we calculated Fph = 1.66 Wp. This is...

    Building Inspection Standard

It may help if you could elaborate on what type of info your looking for. Do you need to knwo what type of inspections to perform, or HOW to perform them? New or existing construction? IBC codes chapter 17 has a thourough list of inspections for new buildings of all types that will guide you...

    chute design

I am looking for information on design of a stepped chute to carry a bulk material discharged from a conveyor. How are the chute dimensions calculated knowing the material properties? I also know the chute angle. The material is being discharged from a valve that has a discharge opening of...

Has anyone heard of S-235-JR material for steel

I am involved in a project where the fabricator has used a material called S-235-JR to fabricate the structural steel. I have never heard of this grade steel, but I am told it has an allowable yield stress less than 36 ksi. Can anyone point me to a spec for this material? thanks.

    Conveyor support structure

I have read through the drift and deflection criteria in the IBC and ASCE 7 and can not find any real guidance as to the allowable lateral drift at the top of a conveyor support. We have a 145 foot bent that has a lateral deflection of 3.2 inches at its top. This seems like a lot, but maybe...

    H-pile to pile cap attachment

Thanks for all of your input! I like the ideas of having a connection that looks like a concrete pile connection (vertical dowels). I tried to stay away from welding the "dowels" but your responses show its really not that big of a deal. THANKS.

    H-pile to pile cap attachment

I am looking for clever ways to attach a steel H-pile to the concrete pile cap...considering uplift. I know of the steel plate welded to the top, but I have overthought that and am not comfortable with a potential cavity under the plate. I have used a "V" shaped rebar threaded through a hole...

    Design of leg supported tank

Can someone tell me the correct design reference code for a LEG supported welded steel tank? I have requested quotes from vendors indicating the tanks be designed and CERTIFIED per API 650 code. API 650 does not seem completely applicable for LEG supported tanks. Is it applicable enough to...

    API 650 or applicable code

I am working on a new tank project and have requested quotes on 14 tanks 20,000gal and smaller. The tanks will contain petroleum based materials. The tanks are all leg supported with several nozzels for filling/emptying and different environmental instruments. I was told to request each vendor...

    API 650

BigInch...you seem confident that API 650 does not cover leg supported tanks. Is that correct? How do you think we have been able to get certification, complete with the certification plate? Is it possible to inspect a leg supported tank and see if it meets the requirements of API 650, except...

    API 650

I am working on requesting quotes for shop fabricated steel tanks that will be used to hold various petrolium products. The tanks are 20000gal and smaller, and are LEG supported. I sent the request out and got responses, but while in the bid process I had conversations with some vendors (not...

    PEMB special inspections

rholder98...thats a good point. I will give it some thought. I think no matter how comfortable I am with the liability and the lawyer stuff I am still going to end up being the DPRIC for these projects, including the steel erection. My dad always said "if it were easy they'd get school girls to...

    PEMB special inspections

Would others feel comfortable being the "Design Professional In Responsible Charge" for a building that was not designed by them? This is the case when I write the Statement of Special Inspections for a PEMB and include the structural steel that was designed by the metal building manufactueer...

    PEMB special inspections

So in your understanding henri2, the person in responsible charge is: 1. making sure someone competent is performing the inspections, 2. receiving and handeling the reports, 3. sending the final reports to the building official along with a statement of what descrepencies were identified, and...

    PEMB special inspections

Thanks henri2, SSI stands for statement of special inspection. JAE, thanks for your input. Your description of what the seal means is interesting. I have never known of a limited definition such as that before, where did you learn the limits you described? I thought that my seal was a...
