    bolt head marking

Hi I have a precision steel bolt M10 x 1.25 and it has a raised letter q on the head. I'm fairly sure this is Japanese. Can anyone tell me if this relates to the material strength or is it something else? Thanks in advance allan

    simhydraulics/volumetric efficiency

Hi First time using this software. If one creates a simple circuit with a pump driving a motor. Then altering the pump volumetric efficiency should effect the pump output flow rate. Not in this software, at least it does not effect the steady state volume flow rate. Am I missing something...

    pneumatic circuits

Hi I need to find out some info on pneumatic circuit design. In particular, stuff like group memory valve equations and directional control valve equations i.e. how to construct them. Can anyone recommend a text book or some other reference that has this type of stuff in it? Thanks in...

    flanges: meaning of abreviations

Hi I've been given a pipeline drawing the the following description for the flanges: 8" SPO CF SR 5K SCH 100 HXL-255 8" SPO CF WN 5K SCH 100 HXL-255 I have no idea what this means apart from (guessing) SCH 100 means pipe schedule 100). Is there some sort of standard for this stuff? I need to...

    electricity today magazine

Hi A bit of a longshot but I'm trying to track down copies of the electricity today magazine from 1996, i.e. october and november. I've tried contacting their website but have not had a response after about a week. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. thanks allan

    aisi 4340 creep rupture data

Hi I'm trying to find some creep rupture data at elevated temperatures for aisi 4340 steel at conditons other than normalized (which I already have). Ideally for material around about a HRC=45. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks allan

    S/N diagram and endurance limit

Hi Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate your time. I managed to sort myself out by finding more data and plotting it on a Haigh diagram which makes more sense. I believe my misunderstanding was that I initially only had data for the condition R=0.1 and I could not see how this could be...

    S/N diagram and endurance limit

Hi I'm having a bit of a problem with the ordinate of a S/N diagram, it says that it is maximum stress, which I find a bit strange. I can understand this if the stress ratio =min/max =-1 then the mean stress will be zero and hence the alternating stress amplitude will be max stress / 2...

Air volume passing through a hole

Hi The maximum flow of air through a hole will be fixed when it chokes. If I remember correctly the max pressure ratio is 1.8 for air. You can check this is any compressible flow text book. The previous reply of p = 1/2 rho v^2 is strictly speaking for incompressible flow and is only really...

low cycle thermal fatigue: nimonic 80a

Hi I'm trying to find the Paris Law constants for Nimonic 80A. I thought this would be easy as it's quite an old alloy, obviously not :-) Any pointers would be extremely useful. Thanks in advance. allan

roark formula for stress and strain 5th ed

Hi I've found an article to calculate shroud loadings on turbine blades but it refers to Roark 5th edition p294, to calculate shear stresses by a graphical method. Unfortunately I only have the 6th edition and p294 is all about circular arches. Does anyone know if the proceedure on p294 of...

    hirth coupling

Hi I'm looking for any info on the design of hirth teeth, primarily why the need for such a high surface finish and tolerance. I'm guessing the high tolerance is an alignment thing as probably these coupling are used for high speed applications. Anything would be useful. I've already viewed...
