Greetings all~
I am employed in a specialty MEP field (fire protection), as a mid-level engineer. With the recent down turn in the economy, we are being asked to market more aggressively. I have not had marketing duties every really, only a support role. Making a call, writing an article for a...
My 2cents is even if you decide you need the MS, get some experience under the belt first. Get the EIT done if you haven't already. I wish I waited, I think of things I would like to explore in greater detail, and my thesis would be FAR more applicable to real world engineering.
The points are being monitored by the main building fire alarm system. My question is does that tie have to be protected with overvoltage device? Is the requirement in NEC or 72 or just good practice?
For a data center facility, there is a remote hut that has some electrical/fiber equipement. It has its own fire suppression and fire detection system. Am I required to have overvoltage protection on the fire alrm lines when leaving the building to monitor this hut?
thanks in advance
Thanks, I just heard Honeywell is coming out with a fire-gas combination detector. They're combining their specialties of the fire groups with honeywell analytics to address this issue.
Section 908 Emergency Alarm Systems calls for a local alarm and an alarm at a constantly attended location, it also refernces requirements in section 415 for occupancy H. Do these systems need to be monitored by the fire alarm system?
Specifically the fire alarm system needs to be monitored by...
jdslon,
I think you can "diffuse" into another specialty of your field, rather than an abrupt switch. I think you should do the following:
1)You should find a firm where you geotech/construction skills are relavent, and where you can also get exposed to wastewater.
2) Take seminars and even...
I personally learned CAD first and then got my BSc and became an engineer. I also learned hand-drafting BEFORE autocad.Although its easy to get pigeon holed into doing CAD, it is a good thing to have as others have pointed out. For the building industry it is essential. Even to just estimate and...

How do you know unless you give it a go?
If you don't like it you'll learn a lot and get a lot of it anyway. You can then return to a more technical path. I think it would at least make you a better engineer by learning the overall process, getting an understanding of other...
California is adopitng NFPA 72 2010 effective january first, and I forget which east coast state by February. There are a lot of changes in this last cycle.
I work with an engineer 1/2-time, and he does forensic fire investigations. What about structural fire? Take an NFPA 921 seminar, and get into that market. That can lead into expert witness work. He does well with that, and throws me a bone once and a while.
Ron/Riskeng~
Its not just anecdotal, NICET's president has sent out a message to all certificants. It apparantly is a growing problem.
Ron as to your comment for NICET certificants acting like engineers. Its a common attitude among fire technicians, example...

It was Latin not Greek, but I know what you mean!TheTick is trying to show he's more edumacated than us. EVERYONE knows De minimis non curat lex translates to "the minimal Les' non-curly!
[ponder]Something to think about
" I didn't find yet any text related specificaly to this subject?"
But, when i was reading about this, i've started to remember about the refrigeration cycle and it's calculations, and how can i apply them in this case, just for interest in the subject... :)Because of the change in pressures...

What is this for? Could you clarify so mabey I could try to help or ask someone else. I'm not sure if you're looking to retrofit a system, design a new one, or conduct a study of some kind.
