I was recently challenged at a site inspection by the adversarial engineer to produce my pocket ID card that we are required to carry for this particular state. I am licensed and current, but shame on me, I did not have my card. He says he is reporting me to the Board.

I generally peruse the quarterly letters of states where I am registered, but have never seen someone admonished for not carrying their card.

This ever happen to anyone?

Thanks all.

I'll just have to wait and see if I hear from the Board.

It will really irk me if I do get disciplined, since I will then have to notify other states where I'm licensed and check the dreaded "Have you ever been disciplined by any jurisdiction" box on any future comity applications.

IF for some dumb reason he actually reports you and IF the Board is so bored that they look into it - I am sure the most they will say - "Yes - that is a rule in this state" and please remember to carry your wallet card.

THAT IS NOT BEING DISCIPLINED - just a reminder.....

I checked and find nothing requiring a Texas PE to carry the card in the Texas rules. We have to send a copy to our department secretary to get business cards showing engineer in the title. I think that I downloaded my card as a PDF at my last renewal.

I would research the particular state's laws and rules, but I am unaware of anything as absurd at as having to have your PE wallet card on your person like a "concealed carry" license in the states where I hold a PE/SE.

There are probably no laws/rules on the state books and it would take an extremely over-zealous PE Board to discipline such a silly rule in this electronic day and age, even if there was.

HOWEVER, most all states require that a professional engineer act...as a professional and be courteous and respectful to one's professional colleages. The adversary engineer is perhaps not meeting this requirement in this instance and could receive disciplinary action himself.

Do that if and only if he's reporting you.

Does your state have on-line license verification? If so, then his complaint is bogus, since the on-line system is specifically intended to deal with this situation, and there would generally be no need to carry your card with you.

Especially if your phone has web access.

My state doesn't even issue the cards any more. If you want one, you have to specifically request one.

In NY, we get a 5" x 8" certificate. On the back it says that we are required to display the certificate in each office we practice. If we do not practice in an office, we are required to have the certificate available for inspection at all times.

Obviously NY PEs need big wallets to carry all the cash they make.

Of course they could fold the card up but that would spoil the joke.

Cheers

I get one of those cards every year. It's never occurred to me, not even once, that I should carry it.

Mike makes a good point about the stamps. I bought my PE stamps in metal and rubber. I am sure that I provided the regulations regarding the stamp details to the supplier. I don't think that I provided any documentation to prove my identification or my license. Things are more closely controlled today. However I am willing to bet a buck or so that any clown could have some printer or stamp maker provide a PE stamp for any name or any state.

Ethics are for the ethical. With a bit of time and money those who lack ethics can easily violate regulations. I would also bet that in certain areas (by geography and industry) this is done and rarely caught. If stamping documents can provide large financial gain then the state board cannot prevent such behavior.

If you go to the trouble to get the license then obey the rules including silly stuff like carrying the card. ;-)

What was his authority to ask you to show him your card?

Two comments:
1) I'm on the DE PE Law and Ethics Committee, and we would never discipline someone for not carrying a crad - if it's even listed anywhere as a requirement. As noted earlier, online registration verification outdates card carrying.
2) I just ordered a DC PE rubber stamp, and to support what's being said in this thread, there was no request for anything official, not even my PE number! THey just used what I gave them! This was an outfit in NY. They got it to me quick enough. I suppose it's not on them to verify accuracy or legitimacy.
