Time + temp for aluminum 6082 in T0 state

Dear colleagues, How should I anneal aluminum alloy 6082 to T0 state? I have T6 a 6082 plate (200 mm thick) and I am used to do T4 + straigthening + T6 but need T0 for forging. 540ºC + 6 hours + cooling in air would be enough? Thanks!

better aluminum alloy for part drawn from sheet?

Dear istimewa, I had a very interesting class on the effect of anisotrophy index in deep drawing of thin sheets while I was studying Materials Engineering at my College. This is the link to the text we used for that class: http://www.tecnun.es/Asignaturas/estcompmec/documentos/thinsheets.pdf...

    CPM10V HEAT TREAT Problem

Dear gear HTr, I asume you quenched the blanks after 11 hours isn't it? Or it was a malfunction during tempering? I asume too that you are looking for comments on alternatives for performing the blank integrity tests. Anyhow, you could try microstructural analysis and microhardness testing...

Investment Casting with Machinable Wax - Prototyping?

Dear Slagathor, There is some other facts about the wax besides the injection. Please take into account the following facts prior tp your prototyping: - Waxes for invest must have low thermal expansion-contraction to avoid primary shell coat cracking/detaching from the surface of the wax...

Aluminum AW-4046 Preparation of the melt & casting

Dear colleagues, I am melting an equivalent to aluminum alloy AW-4046 (9-11%Si; 0,2-0,5%Mg) and casting it into investment casting shells for a trial in the upcoming weeks and I have never dealt with this alloy. Since it is a Si-Mg alloy, I have considered to use the same amount of eutectic...

    Total energy to catastrophic failure

I'm 100% with what our eng-tips colleagues sugested, and just wanted to add one point on the change of the stress-strain curve with deformation speed: the material's curve will change under impact conditions. A related article to show what I talk about...

    Metal grain in various materials

A good way to determine grain orientation is finding a lab with an Scanning Electron Microscope and asking them to EBSD (Electron Backscattered Diffraction) your sample and plot the grain orientation map. It can take about a working day (optimistic) to prepare the sample, run the EBSD analysis...

Did you try with the key-to-steel? http://www.keytometals.com/

Heat treatment process to achieved 7075-T6

One note on distortion during quenching: you can also use up to 34% glicol (Ucon A quenchant, Jo-Quench P-52, Aquatensid BW/RB or similar) in water and have the quenchant media at room temperature. This reduces the cooling speed and as consequently reduces distortion and cracking of the parts...

    AlMgSi0,7 F27

Dear Seerix, ASM Metals Handbook Vol. 4 p.1853 indicates that it might be directly quenched. I would try air-blasting at the exit of the extruder since it is easy to implement. Hardness testing should indicate whether you achieved a proper Mg2Si precipitation or not (around 95 HB). Take care of...

Corrosion protection for aluminum die casting

Is the water you use in the boiler distilled? Could the chlorides or sulfides that are in the water you boil be influencing the corrosion behaviour of the aluminum?

metal (or composite) safe to be implanted into the body

The following ones can be used for implants: - Stainless steel 316L - Commercially pure titanium - Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V - CoCr alloys There is a very nice book on the subject whose title is "Bioengieering materials" published by Elsevier. It also covers ceramics, polymers and the interaction...

    hot straightening 17-4PH investment castings

Have you checked whether the deformation concentrates on the free gaps that the lathe's chuck leaves? If it is a positioned defect like that, the deformation might have been produced by the clamping in the lathe. A quick check could be clamping a part without machining it and increasing the...

Looking for a metal material that can remember its shape

The only metallic shape memory alloys I have heard of work on a temperature activated metallographic change basis and not on a viscoelastic behaviour basis as the sponges. I would say try PE coated Nitinol, since nitinol would intereact withthe skin as it is 50% Nickel, you would need a...

Titanium Nitride Coating a bad Idea?

Did drilling conditions change because the drill bit was coated? Coated tools are normally used in harder working conditions than the uncoated tools and sometimes the substrate can not stand them...

    Etching a weld AA6056 (AA4xxx filler wire)

We work with cast parts and what we do is polishing down to 1 um diamond paste without etching. We can see the Si eutectic precipitate distribution and shape. Fe bearing phases will show clearly too. We always check after T4 and T6. Hope this is of any help!
