    vibrating machine foundation design recommendation

What is everyone's position on isolating vs tying in a machine foundation to the adjacent slab on grade (with dowels)? We prefer to isolate and install unisorb pad but machine specifications recommend dowel into adjacent slab.

    Multiple steel beam web openings

Per AISC Design guide, multiple rectangular opening spacing (clear spacing) must be greater than or equal to the height of the opening. Then in addition to that, clear spacing in composite beams must be greater than 2 x beam depth. This seems excessive for a 24" or 30" beam with multiple small...

    Steel beam splice at midspan

Bolted. Yes it will be a slip critical connection. The question is should the plates and bolts be designed for just the required moment at point of splice, or a percentage of beam capacity (50%, 75%, etc.)

    Steel beam splice at midspan

Can anyone suggest guide/code reference for flange plated beam splice that affects beam stiffness/deflection? I have a 90 ft roof purlin span with a midspan beam splice (at request of fabricator). Beam design was governed by deflection.

    Post Tension Slab Design Software

We are currently evaluating two software programs for P-T slab structure design: ADAPT Builder and RAM Concept (we already have the rest of the RAM structural suite). Does anyone have any comments//concerns/suggestions between these two software programs?

Vertical Slide Clip for Wood Studs

Yes I have seen the truss clips. Not exactly what I am looking for. I have projects with deep TJI joist floor framing spanning 20-30 feet, where deflection should be accounted for in the bypassing studs.

Vertical Slide Clip for Wood Studs

Why is there not a widespread product for a vertical slide clip to attach wood balloon framed walls to floors? This connection is very common in the metal stud industry.

two way concrete slab middle strip

It was originally designed using the working stress method with an fs = 20 ksi. The steel used however has an fy = 40 ksi. Using strength design method in current ACI with Fy = 40, it works for flexure however punching shear fails. Maybe we will waiver to get exemption from certain requirements...

two way concrete slab middle strip

I have an existing two way concrete flat slab built in 1950s. Owner wants to bring the structure to current code for new occupancy. Stress levels work for flexure (shear is a different story), however the bottom rebar splice requirements have changed. I understand the column strip bottom steel...

Existing Building Drift for New Expansion Joint

Designing a building addition in New York State. The addition will be structurally separate. The existing 2 story building does not have any obvious lateral resistance shown in existing drawings. Only thought is the exterior masonry walls help provide lateral resistance. How do I approximate a...

Industrial Building - Paper Machine Operating Floor Load

Thank you all for the responses. mtu, you are correct with your assessment. We will use 400 psf (operating floor) and 250 psf (mezzanines). The paper machine framing is supported independently from the ground level and the operating floor is a separate framed floor surrounding the machine.

Industrial Building - Paper Machine Operating Floor Load

Hello all, I am tasked with structural design of a conventional steel framed operating floor of a paper machine building. The roof and crane above will be a pre-engineered building. I am unsure on floor loading since I have reviewed similar projects with varying loads of 400 - 600 psf (with...

    split slab concrete parking deck

Temperature and shrinkage cracks were controlled by the 7'x7' sawcut grid. Concrete was a normal 3000psi air entrained mix with standard slump and normal weight aggregate.

    split slab concrete parking deck

Sorry, no pictures. No the topping was not reinforced.

    split slab concrete parking deck

No, it was a hard protection board.

    split slab concrete parking deck

I have a split slab parking deck project in northern climate. It is a steel framed floor with a reinforced concrete slab. A waterproof membrane was adhered to the slab then protected by a protection board and a 3" concrete surface topping. The topping has caulked saw cut joints at 7' on center...

    concrete anchor tests

We have a 100 year old concrete building with steel brackets bolted to concrete columns (it appears threaded rods were cast into the columns). These brackets once held up a crane rail. We would like to use these brackets for another application however there is no information on the crane or...
