Steel spindle to timber stringer detail

Only if the connection can be hidden after finishes are added. I agree, the latter doesn't feel right. Current strategy is to weld the post to a vertical plate and then bolt that to the side of the stringer. As for load sharing I am currently creating an FE model to account for some load...

Steel spindle to timber stringer detail

Thanks both, I have added a link for the image. @phamENG you've got it. Your approach makes sense as well, I was just hoping it would be simpler haha

Steel spindle to timber stringer detail

I have a client who is proposing a stair balustrade that has nice sleek spindles that disappear neatly into the timber stringer, please see 3D views attached. My question is how do you prove this detail works. It is only domestic loading (0.36kN/m) but the post surely cannot act as a...

    Supporting Masonry Against Wind Loads

Thankyou EngDM and JAE for your replies. JAE - The walls are grouted, which makes me feel like some additional support is required as the largest span will be 12m. My SE is saying it will be okay, I just wanted to understand if this is pretty typical.

    Supporting Masonry Against Wind Loads

Hi All, The building in the attached image is to have all internal walls removed within the East portion. It is single-storey cavity walls with timber trusses spanning N to S. I require an open space with as few intrusions as possible, without leaving any buttressing walls. Does anyone know a...

Reduction in Depth of Existing Steel Beam

Thanks both, I will also look into those additional checks. Do you think I need to worry too much about the weld? I feel like there would be some awkward shear forces going on at the weld but unsure how to check this.

Reduction in Depth of Existing Steel Beam

Hi All, I have a castellated beam spanning 17.2m as part of a braced steel frame. I need to remove a 2000mm wide by 400mm deep section at approximately the quarter point, please find a sketch attached. I have assessed the current loading on the beam and sized two angles to be welded on either...

    Pier of masonry

Hi all, A client wishes to remove two walls in a single-storey lean-to of a semi-detached house. Floorplans below. https://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=2aa924a1-50f0-456c-bace-af54f5463161&file=Capture1.PNG...

Using an RHS to support trusses?

Hi @GeorgeTheCivilEngineer, Thanks for the reply, I get the span to be approx 5.9m from the attached drawing, I did not know about using a wider beam on a narrower wall though, is there anywhere I can read up on that? As for the buttressing, am I correct in thinking no buttressing is required...

Using an RHS to support trusses?

Hi, thanks for the replies. @SteynvW I believe so yes. @milkshakelake Yes I agree with you it seems odd, the I beam fails in buckling as I have considered the beam unrestrained so I thought I'd try a Rectangular beam to see if the size was reasonable and thats what the numbers seem to say.

Using an RHS to support trusses?

Hi all, A question here, a client wishes to remove a load bearing wall in a bungalow and needs a beam designed to support the trusses which spanned onto this wall. I have designed a 356x171x51UB which is 171 wide and therefore cannot be supported on the 102 wide wall and requires two new piers...
