Circuit/components to "help" battery through spikes in current draw

Thanks for the replies! I'm glad to hear using capacitors isn't a crazy idea at least in theory. Based on what I've seen so far employing capacitors in the 1000s of uF up to 100,000 would be beneficial from a physical volume standpoint. However, it doesn't look like I'm going to get the EE...

Circuit/components to "help" battery through spikes in current draw

We're designing a portable instrument with an embedded computer. It's a computer that gets very hungry for power sometimes, and needs to be powered by batteries at times. We're stuck using off-the-shelf UN38.3 certified batteries at the moment. 18.5V ("5s" or 5-in-series for li-ion cells) is the...

    V-belt slipping - material selection?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I know a scanner can can be many things. In this case, the slippage wasn't an issue for scanning accuracy because we encoded the scan data to the driven sheave rather than using motor position. The slippage is an issue because we're adding z-axis scanning and...

    V-belt slipping - material selection?

We have a rotational scanner which uses a v-belt drive (2L size v-belt, 0.25in wide), and we're getting slippage on the drive sheave. The current design is at maximum tension, although we can modify the design to increase the tension on the belt. Before modifying the geometry of the tension...

Purpose of tabs on PCB connector jacks?

I've gained an expanded understanding of enclosure design from your feedback. All of my questions have been answered so far. Thanks guys.

Purpose of tabs on PCB connector jacks?

Right. Generally we'll have a fan at an opening intake (~1sq.in), blowing air over heat sinks and components to an outlet opening elsewhere on the enclosure. Will these openings necessarily negate the box's shielding?

Purpose of tabs on PCB connector jacks?

Thanks for the (quick!) feedback everyone. I'll make sure the EE team is aware of the options and requirements associated with these 'EMI fingers'. Keith - RE: "...the entire box's shielding concept is void and null if there are any little air gap slots present in the enclosure" Does this mean...

Purpose of tabs on PCB connector jacks?

I've been designing some enclosures over the past few years and have thus far avoided jacks that have the metal spring-tabs on the sides of connectors, preferring plastic ones for a flush finished look. I'm now presented with a part that has these metal spring tabs and I'm told this is the part...
