    Upcoming Disaster DEF Shortage

Yeah. We just had rivers catching on fire back then. Good times!

    Upcoming Disaster DEF Shortage

It’s great that you are thinking proactively about this. What with that and the impacts on food prices, is it time for a national moratorium on turf fertilization? Possibly sin taxes on meat consumption as well considering that, pound for pound of resource consumption, it’s the most...

    Engine designs that have problems

They consume it with unnecessarily high performance capabilities as well. Your average grocery getter family sedan has 0-60 times that rivals that of the muscles cars of the 70’s. Why? I guess because that’s what the markets want. That’s what the commercials tell us anyway. What kind of...

Miami Beach, Champlain Towers South apartment building collapse, Part 16

Is this the sort of damage that could have been caused by a tar buggy that fell sometime prior to the collapse? I kid… But looking at the planter pictures, imagine if it wasn’t the column under the planter that was punching out. But the column to the left of that area. Wouldn’t the bending...

China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 737-800 Crash

It’s the trailing edge of the winglet. Same swooshes as on the tail. But at the right scale.

Suez Canal blocked by container ship

They need to change the company name to Evergrounded. Because right now, the Ever Forward is the Never Movin’.

    Ukraine Nuclear Power Plants

Is it time to secure some potassium iodide (if we haven’t already)? How much should each individual have on hand?

Naval Fuel tank leak in Hawaii

To settle splitting the hairs of potential hazards and contamination (past and present):

Naval Fuel tank leak in Hawaii

It’s because those are standardized assays. The DOH probably doesn’t have a TDH-JP5. Maybe they should. But it seems pretty academic, doesn’t it? Seems like a non-sequitur when we should be talking about how the tank shouldn’t leak, regardless.

Naval Fuel tank leak in Hawaii

And lest we be distracted by these blatherings about MTBE: Can I get a show of hands from those of us here that want to drink that?

Naval Fuel tank leak in Hawaii

That’s acute toxicity. Not chronic exposure. And per the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Toxicological Profile for Gasoline, probably isn’t accurate anyway. But tell me more about how you’d drink a shot of gasoline once a week because it’s not as acutely toxic as ethanol. Woof...

Naval Fuel tank leak in Hawaii

”Discharging gasoline into the drinking water and environment isn’t the problem. It’s the democrats that added MTBE to it.” That sounds so stupid. How gasoline do you want in your drinking water? With or without MTBE? How much benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene would you like to be...

    Potential Disaster, 5G and Aircraft

I 100% appreciate your contributions here. It’s just sometimes I struggle to make sense of it =) Phones are on in the back and in the front = ? What’s the faraday (farads) cage reference? What’s the iPad issue? And what’s this deal about a gsm node? Like the inflight Wi-Fi? What do you...

    Potential Disaster, 5G and Aircraft

I often wish Alistair would answer my airplane questions. Until I remember he doesn’t speak American.

    Potential Disaster, 5G and Aircraft

This thread doesn’t really relate too much to putting phones, tablets, watches, etc. in “airplane mode.” But the concerns are maybe similar. I’m pretty confident that most passengers give zero F’s about ensuring they do this. Which makes me think that it must be a non-issue? Or it should be...

Two Apartment Fires, NYC Dec 16 and, NYC, 11 AM Jan 9

It’s also a straw man. I don’t see anyone saying that. We are talking more along the lines of ‘just teach them any fire safety and some hazards may be mitigated.’ As for doors, there are ways to tell when doors are open, aren’t there? Passive and active. Even if just a daily inspection by...

Two Apartment Fires, NYC Dec 16 and, NYC, 11 AM Jan 9

Signage, pamphlets, videos, meetings, announcements, functional self-closing doors, adequate heat, and regular drills all would contribute to better outcomes than the one that resulted from the lack of those things.

Two Apartment Fires, NYC Dec 16 and, NYC, 11 AM Jan 9

I mean, they lived there without adequate heat. Right? Were there even optional drills? Instructions? Regular announcements? Informative videos in multiple languages? Educational materials? Anything? What did the multibillion dollar slumlords even attempt to provide? Certainly not...

Nope. I’m saying that implementation of those practices are the responsibility of the owner and/or owner’s agent (Captain AKA The Super). But we’ve already established the owner isn’t even interested in investing resources in basic essentials. Like adequate heating.
