Thanks to both of you!
I have looked at the general Nastran forum for previous questions. I did learn more about dmp and smp. It looks as though smp would be available to me. I don't know if it uses floating point calculations. I will look into that.
The work that I am doing involves...
Further to my question:
I ran an analysis a couple of weeks ago using SOL 106 with about 1.3 x 10^6 degrees of freedom and it took 16.5 hours. I have read that there is a command dmp=p to run "distributed memory parallel processing" for SOL 101, 103, 108 etc. but no SOL 106. However the...
Hi:
I have been looking at buying a new computer for Windows 10 and have looked at the 12 core AMD processor. On the other hand previous threads, thread 561-357474 and thread 561-314150 indicate that the 12 core CPU would be a waste of money. John Baker replied in those that the math was not...
I have resolved the issue. It seems that the order of steps is important. After preparing the geometry and then setting the size on the surface, then go back and ensure all the size along curves are what is desired. Then use the command Mesh Control, Approach on Surface to remove all the...
I am still trying to find an easy way to modify the base and top to a different pair of surfaces. I came across a reply to a different post by Blas Molero that suggested using mesh control, approach on surface, and removing any links or matching between the surfaces that are giving me problems...
I have some solid geometry consisting of a number of tapered brick shapes, six sided. The existing top and base are different sizes so I do not want them to have the same number of nodes per side. However the other two pairs of sides can have the same number of nodes per side and would work...
The help desk did provide guidance. When creating the connection regions there are three radio buttons for choosing the output. When doing an edge to surface connection as in Blas Molero's example it is important to choose the node output. When doing a face to face connection with plate...
Not yet.
I agree that they can be helpful, and have been in the past. I will have to find my GTAC ? numbers. I have also found this forum useful, including your posts. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a model with a dozen or so connections in it some with regions that have branches, but not all of them. One of the connection pairs in this model come from the same surface model as a previous model that had a successful connection.
I read an answer to a post in a different forum that...
Thanks for your reply.
I am only using first order elements and all the nodes are connected. The model that I am working on is a unit cell for a twill weave composite and the problem only occurs in the matrix, not the fibers. If I refine the mesh I will still end up with the same problem. I...
On occasion a situation arises where it would be nice to join a single face of a hex element to two wedge elements so that all the nodes are merged at the interface, but one edge of the wedge elements crosses the face of the hex element. What sort of inaccuracies in the results would occur from...
Thank You:
That is what I wanted to hear, that for a given criteria, they each use the same way of calculating it. It is just that each software company seems to want to use their own nomenclature for various features, commands, etc. and sometimes it gets confusing.

Hi:
I have recently switched from NEi Nastran to NX Nastran and my work is often with composites. Both use the FEMAP pre and post processor. NEi used to publish some of their output results column descriptions in the release guides but I haven't found the equivalent yet for NX, it might be...
Thanks Blas:
I read the info you linked to and it was useful. I not only disconnected from the internet and turned everything else off, but also disabled my virus checker as it suggested. This all helped with the speed. I still have memory issues though. There seems to be a file size limit...
No Luck.
With increased memory it again stops doing anything at the same loopid as when it ran out of memory. Status is active but no further action or messages. Pressed kill job and got acknowledgement in Femap message area, but Nastran continues "not responding". "end task" doesn't work...
Thank you Blas:
My old NEi had something similar that I had forgotten about. Thanks for the tip on where to find the setting. I tried it at 6*1024 but still ran out of memory. Then I discovered that my virtual memory setting in Windows was set lower than I expected. I will try again...
Hi:
I have used linear static analysis for many years but have recently switched from NEiNastran to NX Nastran which gives me the ability to do non-linear static.
My test model is of a four bar test on a composite panel. The foam core is non-linear solid elements with skins of laminate shell...
Thanks for your replies:
In the end I chose to go with Femap with NX Nastran instead of just staying with the existing Femap 11.1 and NEi Nastran. I don't know whether the deal made financial sense in my particular situation, but the feature that I gained was the ability to use the non-linear...
Hi:
It has been a year now since NEiNastran and Femap went their separate ways. My maintenance just ran out so it is decision time for me.
I am interested to know others' experiences switching from the NEiNastran version solver to the NX Nastran solver.
My work is often with composites and...
