It's not free but check out Haestad Method's FlowMaster. It is basically a normal depth calculator for channels (you can use a predefined channel such as trapazoidal or circular or you can define your own cross section). It also will calculate inlet capacities based on HEC-22 as well as...
Kate,
I've used Pipeworks with great success but I haven't had any success using it to do the actuall design. What I do is layout all my pipes and the locations of inlets and manholes and then import that in Haestad Method's StormCad. I do the design in StormCad and then export the pipes back...
Just to add a little to this conversation, here is probably the most important rule of using contours:
Every contour has no end and no begining and is one continuous line.
This may seem wrong at first but it's not. You may say, "Well, what about at the edge of the page?" The fact is, you are...
Terry,
That is exactly how I would design it. Here's my description of the contours as we follow a line that slices through the pond. As we are coming down from the existing 100 contour, we reach a point where the slope steepens from existing in order to fit the pond, say an elevation of 60...
gomirage,
Check out Civil Engineering Reference for the PE Exam by Lindberg. It's the only book I used during the PE Exam (I took the water resources exam). I highly recommend it. It covers everything you could imagine in the field of civil engineering.
Brian
Contours cannot split, merge, break, etc. The reason you may see this on plans is due to a misunderstanding of what a contour is. A contour does not dilineate an elevation but rather a change in elevation. For example, a contour with an elevation of 100 does not show where the ground is at an...
In addition to what CarlB said, if you have Land Desktop or Map (both AutoDesk products) there is a boundary trim. This would be found in a sub menu of the Map menu (can't remember the sub menu name off the top of my head). This routine is much more robust than the express tools and will erase...
Scott,
I'm not quite sure I follow what you're asking, but I'll try to answer. By basin, I'm assuming you mean a detention pond (although I've never heard of a detention pond refered to as a basin). I suppose it would depend on what is going on upstream of the basin. Is the area large (i.e...
From my experience with LDT, I would not use pipeworks to design a storm sewer system. I would use another application to design the pipes and then use pipeworks to draft them. If you aren't doing any design and are strictly drafting, Pipeworks does not handle any shapes other than circular...
Mark,
It definitely sounds like it is text style related. When you create the linetype, create a text style that will only be used for that linetype. Use the express tools to create the line type (by far the easiest way to do it).
Brian
Honestly? You should hire a geotech engineer or a geologist. You have not even come close to giving enough information for anyone here to provide you with a feasable answer. An engineer would need to see the site, find the soil type, perhaps prepare a complete soils report (if one hasn't been...
The Denver area has set standards for detaining the first flush of a storm and basis it on the land use and area. They also have a reduction factor for sites that limit the amount of directly connected impervious areas (dcia). You should contact the reviewing agency to get the requirements for...
Get the Civil Engineering Reference Manual!!!!! I can't stress that one enough. There's a study guide in the front. Follow it and you should do well. Do all the practice problems. I can't stess enough how helpful the CERM is (www.ppi2pass.com). I only used one other book during the test...
GRSMITH,
Haestad Method's StormCad supposedly has the capability you are looking for (still hoping to convince the boss to get it). Apparently, you can export pipeworks data into StormCad and do your desing (pipe sizing and inverts) and then export back into pipeworks.
Brian
In addition to what others have stated, LDD will not calculate pressure flow in a pipe system (aka surcharged). As soon as we get StormCad v 5, I will be in heaven. Supposedly, you can lay out your pipe runs in LDD via alignments and pipeworks, export that into StormCad, do your vertical...
"JONES28",
I have used "Land Developement Handbook" by Dewberry & Davis and it pretty much encompasses the entire Land Developement field. Everything from surveying to planning to drainage to utilities to grading. It's quite a nice piece of reference to have.

ROX29160,
Check out http://www.ci.westminster.co.us/bus/reg/manuals/Specs/DrwgIndex.htm or do a search at www.google.com for thrust block detail.

Brian,
If you have an older version of LDD, you can migrate them into your current version. Check out www.budcad.com for a migration tutorial. If you don't have them, you must purchase them seperately from AutoDesk.
Brian
Or, you could simply draw a polyline to the end you want to be the start, join the existing polyline to the new one you just drew, break the polyline at the point they were joined and erase the temporary polyline. Walla, a reversed polyline.
