Mothballing - Air gap vs Blanking

We are currently working on mothballing a PSM covered plant. When I've done mothballing at past companies, I've always been taught to air gap the equipment in order to call it mothballed in PSM but there is a question if we have to air gap it or if slip/pancake blanks would be adequate. I don't...

    Which API for blend tank/reactor

Hello all. I'm working on developing a MIQA program for some blend tanks we have (<5000gal). There is no reaction that occur in these tanks - just adding a bunch of materials and mixing them together and pumping them out. In the past, my company inspected these tanks to STI001 which is for...

API vs STI for ASME Coded Vessel

We have a storage tank with flammables that was built to ASME Section 8/pressure vessel code. We're trying to determine if we should be using API 653 or STI SP001. I know API is more strict, but all of the other tanks at our site are inspected to STI standard. Any suggestions?

    Breaker Design Correct?

We had an incident where we shutdown parts of plant by tripping one of our main breakers. Maintenance went to switch a 70A breaker that tripped which caused the breaker. We know the 70A breaker tripped because of a ground fault when we found some wire with no insulation on it. My question is...

    Facility Siting

I'm looking to do the analysis for an existing facility for solvents and isocyantes which we have in storage tanks and other large volumes (reactors) and are covered under PSM and NJ TCPA programs, which require it. The PHAs we have done don't really include except a few sentences that don't...

    Facility Siting

I have to do a facility siting analysis for my plant and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for an outside resource? I googled Facility Siting and saw a number of companies, but was hoping someone with experience with any of the companies can give suggestions.

Remove 1-part of 3-part pressure vessel - Any special considered needed?

The vessel acts like a distillation column off a reactor for glycol and water. It was designed so that the water evaporates and the glycol goes back to the reactor. We want to get rid of the bottom part (which is setup like a vertical heat exchanger) since the glycol just seems to settle down...

Remove 1-part of 3-part pressure vessel - Any special considered needed?

What about just putting in a slip blank between the flanges? Would that still need the additional resources?

Remove 1-part of 3-part pressure vessel - Any special considered needed?

Thanks for all the input. I was afraid that it was going to be more work than simply installing a blank flange.

Remove 1-part of 3-part pressure vessel - Any special considered needed?

So I looked at the flange and it was a designed flange (no ASME/ANSI stamps on it). So if I'm to remove part of the vessel and put a blank on it, that work needs to be done by someone with an R stamp and then have to figure out what the inspection procedures are?

Remove 1-part of 3-part pressure vessel - Any special considered needed?

So we have a 'distillation column' that is made up of 3 parts (top, middle, and bottom). The three parts are connected by flanges. All parts are manufactured to ASME VIII and share the same National Board number. We want to run a test where we remove the bottom part and blank off the end of the...

    PSM requirement around MOC

I'm currently working on upgrading our PSM system. One of my questions is around when an MOC is needed when updating operating procedures. Right now, there is no procedure on what is needed to create and revise an operating procedure. We've just been writing an MOC each time. My plan was to...

Determining Mixing Time in Storage Tanks

Our products hav[sub]e a huge range of viscosities (up to 35,000cps) and the size of the batch could be anything ( 0 - 150,000 lbs) that need mixing. There are essentially no solids in the tank. I couldn't find anything in my text books (I'm currently the only chemical engineer on our plant...

Determining Mixing Time in Storage Tanks

We make polyesters at the plant. The tanks are heated to keep the material molten.

Determining Mixing Time in Storage Tanks

We currently have several large (105m3) final product tanks. Since the plant I work at is a batch operation, we typically have material in the storage tank and once another batch in the reactor of the product is done, we pump it into the storage tank. We then mix the the product in tank simply...

How to verify liquid level in tank

All the storage tanks are polyesters, some of which have solids.

How to verify liquid level in tank

I've had issues with radar transmitters at my other jobs, but this new company I work for likes radar transmitters. Maybe I'll try ultrasonic. These tanks are very tall - the shortest one is around 36 feet tall (250,000lbs+) and have to kept hot (150F+) since they are polyester storage tanks...

How to verify liquid level in tank

We currently have several large storage tanks with radar level transmitters we are having issues with. The problem is that the level (which we then convert to weight) is never correct. For example, when loading a trailer the level difference has the weight calculation at 41,000 lbs and when we...

    API 510 for Non-Pressurized Vessel

We are currently developing an inspection program for my company. We have several reactors that are kept under vacuum/atmospheric pressure. The only pressure is from the raw material pumps into them and the nitrogen blanket, which is only a few inH2O. These reactors were made under ASME Pressure...

    Conservation Vent Sizing

Hi everyone. I'm working on evaluating relocating some conservation vents for our equipment that are not in an easy to access area. The inlet piping to the CV would be extended with more a few more bends. I know there are rules around 3% inlet pressure drop for pressure relief valves, but I...
