I have no idea of the size of the pinion, because the customer only sent a coupon of the failed part. We supply to them heat treatment services, and they asked for help in the analysis of that part.

No, I could not say if the part is carburized or nitrided, and the analysis was taken at the center of the sample, (it is a coupon 3/4" dia, 1/2" h), so I don't think we are checking at the carburized, or nitrided Surface. The verified hardness was 255 HB.

Good evening, our customer, ask for a double stress relieving, it's not about a quench and temper heat treatment, in such case, I agree with you in doble tempering, in order to meet the NACE MR0175 requirement.

I want to know, what is the meaning of a double stress relieving on a low carbon Steel, I think, if the stress level of the parts is high, then a single treatment is enough to complete the stress relieving operation, by holding the parts at an adecuate temperature and time.
