PE Li censure in some states with 16-hour SE exam only

I was curious if anyone else ran into this problem in certain states for me being Washington and Oregon. I sat for the FE in college and passed. Obtained my four years required experience and passed the 16-hour Structural (vertical and horizontal). Most states accept this for a professional...

Master files reuse after leaving a company - reseal

So I'm currently in the process of switching companies. The company I am currently with has repeated designs that get reused on a regular basis. I have reviewed and digitally sealed these documents. I am sure they will request that for a time frame of transition that i leave my crimper so...

    Interior Bearing walls (residential)

Atrizzy, My issue is i'm okay with a 4" slab on grade for a certain load "X"/ft, however, code (to me) specifically has requirements to increase depth to 8" regardless of that capacity per ACI (and then IRC throws some confusion in for 6"). I also agree with your points on local settlement at...

    Interior Bearing walls (residential)

I am curious on some others thoughts and opinions on foundations below interior bearing walls on residential structures. I have heard of some engineers utilizing strictly the slab on grade (4 or 3 1/2" slab) as bearing for interior bearing walls not subject to uplift, however, I can't justify...

    Masonry wall window/door openings

I am curious when designing masonry walls(masonry openings) which way everyone tends to lean when they design. NCMA prefers designing modular wall openings.... or wall openings that allow for all conformant block sizes. I believe they recommend 2" on each side of the window (so 4" horizontal...

Jack and Corner Jack Connections HVHZ

Been trying to get ahold of the building department to get some clarification on sections R4409.8 (FBC 2321.7) for the connections of wood trusses to wood trusses in HVHZ's but have not had much luck. was curious how others handle it if they have worked in the area. The main section I am...

    April 2016 structural PE

I still remember questions from my exams... You will probably think about the problems you think you may have missed for quite some time I know I did. The waiting for the results is miserable. But I definitely agree write down the problems if you remember them. I never thought of doing that...

    Structural Engineering Services Pricing

Awesome thanks. Yeah I had heard a lot for residential in the area of 0.8$-1.25$ per sf for the structural design and drafting depending on difficulty. Then I have read on some other forum posts for large market tract housing they charge per elevation at a reduced cost... .say 5 elevations...

    Structural Engineering Services Pricing

I have priced structural engineering services for work in different industries but we are starting to get into residential/commercial design. Was curious on how everyone else tends to price jobs. Normally I would base work on difficulty and put a price together based on a estimated hourly cost...

    NCEES SE Practice Exam mistakes?

I looked at AISC Design examples..... see assumption in example E.4A "Assume the column is continuously supported in the transverse direction (the y-y axis of the column)." So they are pretty much saying KLy will not govern so that is why it isn't compared in your example E.4B and they only use...

    NCEES SE Practice Exam mistakes?

I believe in the solution they are using the KyL/ry to govern.... if you look at table 4-22 they use the value for 93.8 (y governing) in lieu of 61.1(x governing). To your concern about KLy_eq vs KLy....see page 4-4 it states "to determine the available strength in axial compression, the table...

    civil construction design

main key in design (to me) is understanding load transfer.... proper transfer over loads and accounting for that in the design of individual members and components so they work properly in the system is key and sometimes not properly analyzed. i.e. don't design a column as a "lean" column when...

    LL for Pool Deck

100psf should probably be adequate. If you reference ASCE 7-10 they recommend 1.5x the occupancy served not required to exceed 100psf for balconies and decks in table 4-1. If you want a little more comfort you can increase the live load but I think you should be okay in terms of justifying it...

    Structural Engineering Exam

Agree with 8thstreet. I took the exams last April and there are definitely a lot of bridge questions I don't think you can get by with ignoring AASHTO by any means. Like I said before it is pretty well balanced between bridge and building in my opinion for the morning sections.

    Structural Engineering Exam

Just remember just because the question count comes out to be 20% bridge doesn't mean its 80% building. There are several questions that really don't fall under either specifics. I think it is pretty well balanced if I recall.
