    containment of high temp liquid

I wish I could give you a better answer, but what does ACI 350 "Environmental Engineering Concrete Structures" say?

    HAIRPINS & TIE RODS

I found some interesting info (and a drawing) in one of DYWIDAG .pdf I downloaded a while ago. that is, there's a section view of a metal building system main frame with foundations using hairpins. Ah! here it is: http://www.dywidag-systems.com/uploads/media/DSI-USA_DYWIDAG_Tie_Rods_us.pdf

    Loose cannon colleague

"...I feel like I want to knock his block off..." If he's at the same pay-level or title-level as you, pop him one.

    Professional ID Card...?

OK, there's a SEAONY event next month (Oct, so it's next week) and I'll see what they have going on.

To Tell or Not to Tell, That is the Question!!??

This is all going to come to a head really soon. Drawing is an important engineering skill that should never have been compromised by anything. My own opinion is that it is not compromised by CADD. Not one bit. Presentation of plans is still presentation of plans. If your firm has a CADD...

    Professional ID Card...?

I just opened a letter from the State of New York Office of the Professions - it looked just like my PE renewal letter, so I thought at first that they'd not gotten my check... NO! They're offering a "Professional Identification Card" for $20. Basically, this ID card would use my digitized...

    Red Bull Soap Box Derby

I don't have any experience with Red Bull or their contests, but that's a pretty cool gig you've got!

    PDH's

MarcbSE says, "Most of these courses are just about useless from an educational standpoint but provide full credit for pdh credits. " I do agree to an extent. The free PDH's from CE News and Structural Engineer (same as the gostructural link shemp mentions) cover topics that I find relevant...

    PDH's

I just got a pdh for attending an NSPE meeting. They had a cool lecture on forensic engineering. ...I also just got my certs in the mail for the free PDH self-study (read article, take quiz, fax quiz answer sheet to PSH sponsor) from CE News and Structural Engineer magazine...

    wood wool slabs

I've never heard of wood wool slabs. I found a paper called "Mechanical and physical properties of wood-wool slabs" (http://www.springerlink.com/content/c7w3p25ux577x634/), but the web link goes to just an abstract. I also found a book on plastering that describes a wood wool slab as a material...

Disconcerting info on company found out. Interview very soon.

Go to the interview. When you are asked if you have any questions about the firm, use that as your chance to ask about all the openings. Be positive about it; if you know anyone who's looking for a job you might tell the interviewer that's why you're curious about the number of openings.

    PE Renewel Time...

...that would explain the e-mail I got from Contech a couple of months ago asking from my license number. Still, it's weird that NY is working on what looks like the "honor system."

    PE Renewel Time...

So, time to send in $197 to the State of New York... Dig this, from the "Continuing Education" instructions: "...Each licensee shall maintain evidence of having completed the continuing education requirements for a period of six years and be subject to the Department [that's the New York State...

    ASCE 7 Mean Roof Height

? Then why insist on exposure C in the first place?

    ASCE 7 Mean Roof Height

That's a good point, but from joder's description, it sounds like it's all surface roughness C.

    ASCE 7 Mean Roof Height

OK, so the building's not regular, so... First iteration, I wouldn't include the lower roofs in determining the mean roof height. The way I interpret the exception is that you can go with Exposure B where surface roughness B "prevails in the upwind direction for a distance of at least [1500]...

I've got two of them. I've written some programs... but went back to my 28S.

Where'd you go to school, Peter? I went to what used to be called Brevard Engineering College.

    ASCE 7 Mean Roof Height

Questions I have: 1. Is the building truly "regular" in geometry? Will your MWFRS reflect that the lower roofs really matter concerning wind load? The commentary, section C6.2, page 282, talks about the issue of regular-shaped buildings. That might be of some help. Now, if you're near a body...
