Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapses...

The stamped permit set shows no rebar in slab (4000 psf normal wt with fiber and mesh). No way that the deck guy (or an engineer paying attention) would do that, there has to be an explanation. Maybe you could put enough rebar to make it work on paper but that would be super outside the norm. TW

Hard Rock Hotel under construction in New Orleans collapses...

Those spans for deck are way excessive, they can't be right but that is what those plans show. TW

asme b18.6.3 spec thread cutting screw

Contractor friend is trying to find the ultimate forces for one of these screws (3/8" diameter) screwed all the way into 5/8" A36 steel plate. I can't find any charts or values and don't know the ASME spec. He needs it to prove to client that he can meet a blast force, they are doing a...

    Miami Pedestrian Bridge, Part V

Looking at truck dashcam video again I do now see the "poof" to the north at bottom 11/12 and that seems to proceed into failure. The poof does not look natural at all. TW

    Baseball netting wind load

I am replacing a 21 foot tall chain link fence that only had 3" pipes at 9 ft o.c., which from a post selection guide for fencing I found it not adequate at all. They are wanting to replace the fence with baseball netting and have the posts at 18 ft o.c., which I am to design. My question is...

    brick veneer repair

50 year old two story building with brick veneer has no expansion joints and has cracked in all the usual places. Owner would like to repair and make it right. Can brick be repaired and joints cut into existing, that would seem to be most logical but not sure how practical? What is typically...

cracks in corner of building slab

No hairpins. Anchor bolts are embedded in grade beam/pedestal (with rebar). Slab is roughly 80x90 and so far no other cracks in slab, though I expect there to be some. These showed up quickly. The metal building has a second floor and there is not a lot of lateral force at column bases.

cracks in corner of building slab

Here's a picture. The slab is grade supported, 5" typical but thickens to 8" on edges over grade beam.http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=1a0893b3-db59-4dcd-b3fa-5945c6b53cd6&file=photo_1.JPG

cracks in corner of building slab

Recently poured slab for a 2 story metal building has developed diagonal cracks in each corners. The cracks are in the slab only, the grade beam had poured several weeks ago. Each corner had embedded anchor bolts (in grade beam/foundation). Not a crack pattern that I have seen that I...

ASR question in elevated composite deck

Would you say, all things being equal in this elevated slab, that the slab's ASR potential is the same whether or not they put on the epoxy coating?

ASR question in elevated composite deck

This article: http://nebrconcagg.com/assets/PromotionPages/Mix%20Design/ASR1.PDF says (on page 2): Sufficient moisture. Moisture allows migration of alkali ions to reaction sites and the resulting gel absorbs moisture, leading to expansion. For this reason, deleterious ASR does not occur in...

ASR question in elevated composite deck

This building has a 6.5" composite concrete deck (3500 psi, fiber-reinforced, 520 lb cement) that is the second floor of a 3 story building. There is no ground floor so below this deck is not conditioned space. It is covered by metal framing so it is protected from rain. There was a...

Contractor and testing lab having a disagreement on this, I don't remember every being asked about it. Looking for guidance on two issues: Form removal for pile caps - ACI 318 basically says do no harm and doesn't give specific time. There is a lot of discussion in ACI 301 about the issue but...
