I think the problem was on my end. I called it "Custom Materials" which seems to be a reserved name in Solidworks 2010. However, I also ran it through an XML parser and reformatted it. Who knows. Clearly the problem was on my end. Sorry for the alarm.

Hm. Well, I solved it by changing that line to use the SaveAs method and gave it the same part name as the open part and that worked fine. No idea why Save3 didn't work. retval = Part.SaveAs(MyDir & "\" & MyFile)

How about using the wrap feature? Make a linear sketch pattern with what you want and then wrap it onto the surface.

In that case, you can use a "lock" mate to lock one component to another. I haven't used it yet myself, (new to 2008?) but that sounds like it will do what you want. -Matt

I talked with my VAR and got it. Not only do you have to save as, rename, check references and save all as copy, but then you need to go into explorer, select the assembly, open up the references tab and replace all of the aforementioned out-of-context references.

Once you have two of the mates in place, you could fix the part in space.

I can't figure out how to change the file name of an assembly that has virtual components in it without causing the references to become out-of-context. The virtual components are still looking for the original name of the assembly. Even save all as copy doesn't seem to work. Anyone solve this...

In 2008, if the said BOM column is linked to a custom property, you can choose to "Keep Link" when editing the BOM. It then updates the property with whatever you type. Unfortunately, I don't think QTY is one of those column types.
