    316L and steam

Hi thanks for the answers, Yes chlorides in the feed water is controlled to normal low levels. We need to use 316L because of corrosion from the outside in an H2SO4 plant environment where a lot of fumes are present. Even our hand railing and structural steel is 316L. We have fortunately used...

    316L and steam

Hi there, We have a new steam line designed and built from 316L running at 203degC from our boilers. It feeds a variety of process equipment. I have subsequently picked up from B31.1 that acc to note 1 that 316L is not allowed for boiler external piping. Does this mean our new line with around...

Building over a buried gas pipe (temporarily)

Hi there, I have a problem that I need to build a building over a 1200mm deep transmission 150NB gas pipe of 600kPa. The pipe is to ASME B31.8. My plan is to cast only the raft foundation 450mm deep and then wait until the pipe can be rerouted before construction goes further. Local council...

    Surface through points

CorBlimeyLimey, Thanks for the macros. Just a question, once the points are in SW, how does one easily create a surface? I can if required create 3D Sketch lines in triangular format between all points. From these lines can one then create a surface? Regards

    Surface through points

CorBlimeyLimey, Thanks for the helpful macros. Once the points are in SolidWorks, do you have a tip to create a surface or volume from these points? I can manualy (2 hours of work) create 3DSketch lines between the points but how does one create a surface from this? Regards

    Surface through points

Hi there, I have 30 land surveyed points (X,Y,Z) in SolidWorks that I would like to create a surface through. The points came from a land surveyor and I now need to calculate the volume of the surveyed land. I am sure SW can do the trick? Any assistance would be appreciated. Regards

    Isolation valve on pressure vessel

Hi there, The OHS act states that a pressure vessel shall have a relief device as well as a pressure gauge. I know it is not allowed to install a isolation valve upstream of the relief device unless rigorous lock out procedures are applied. The question is, is it allowed to install a isolation...

Import PTB files in Access Database

Hi, I need to get all the piping components within the Part Table (PTB) files into an Access database. I tried the manual process of importing into Excel, then tweaking it a bit and then appending each single part file into Access. I will take me many moons to do this. Is there perhaps an...

    Seismic pipe stress software?

Hi, We need to do seismic and standard pipe stress inhouse and thus I have been investigating which software to buy. My feeling is that eventually it will be between Algor PipePak, AutoPipe and Caesar. I got demo software from some of the suppliers but they have deactivated so much functions...

    Certifugal drop-in replacement refrigerant

Hi there, I have 2 off 450kW centrifugal chillers running at -25°C with refrigerant R12. I checked that R134a will give a 10% decrease in capacity and oil is also not compatible. Is R134a the best solution or is there something better? Acc to me the drop-in refrigerant must have the...

    But list

Hi there, I have a simple general question. When we construct plants and we are nearing completion, we generate a "but list". People ask me why it is called that and I cannot answer them. Is it perhaps a that everthing is complete "but" the following items? Perhaps...

    Hastaloy C-276 bellows failure

Hi there, We recently had a failure of a bellows in a control valve. The chemical involved is a in the HF acid family and acc to my knowledge, Hast. C-276 is OK. The question is whether this material is a good bellows material and whether it is more suceptable to fatigue. The valve was in...

    PID value calculation

Hi there, Is it mathematically possible to calculate the corrrect PID values from history performance data of a not optimally tuned control valve. We have a PLC which does not have autotuning facilities. Regards Alwyn

    Coefficient on tubeside of HX

Hi there, I am designing a shell and tube hx (Tema type BKU)to cool glycol from -17 to -21°C with NH3 evaporating in the shell side (450kW). I get a very large hx where the tube side film resistance is 93% of total resistance. Is there a way to improve the tube side coefficient in order to...

    Operating fan against closed suction

Hi there, I have an application where I am thinking of installing a fan in a vent stack. This stack is 32m high and contains gas with a SG of 3.5. The vent line is a closed system except for a number of relief valves that will vent into it in a emergency. Thus the problem is that the fan will...

    Stepwise control

Hi there, I have to control a water chiller in order to obtain a +/-1°C water temperature by utilizing four steps of control. (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). I have a set of data that represents the current performance of the existing system. Is there a way to analyze this data to obtain the best...
