The main reason i have seen it used is if you want to bw able to switch your model from a nominal size to a mean dimension size. In other words, if a particular size of something has a plus "something" tolerance and a minus "nothing" tolerance. (I.E. 12 +2/-0) nominal model=12, mean model=13...
