In Sketcher, when creating a dimensional constraint, it is possible to right-click in the numerical field and add a tolerance.

I have never used it thinking it had something to do with clash analysis but It doesn't seem to help clash analysis.

I then though I would be usefull for FT&A module or Drafting but, again, nothing happens when I create a dimension.

I am then wondering what does it do??? I doubt Dassault would have created a function that has no use... other than stiffener I mean.

One example of it's purpose is to be able to put all of the tolerances in the sketcher part dimensions and then carry them over to a drawing view using Generate Dimensions command in the Drafting workbench. See below steps 1-3.

There are probably other valuable use cases as well...

Well Thank you drewmumaw!!!!

I usually don't trust any automatic generation of anything in catia, hence why I never saw that!

10 years of CATIA and still learning!

@supergee
me too! I learn something new every day, hence why I started visiting Eng-Tips.com on a daily basis now. Never know what your gonna learn next.

I'm sure there are other uses for putting tolerances in the sketcher dims, but that's the only one I've ever used.

The main reason i have seen it used is if you want to bw able to switch your model from a nominal size to a mean dimension size. In other words, if a particular size of something has a plus "something" tolerance and a minus "nothing" tolerance. (I.E. 12 +2/-0) nominal model=12, mean model=13. You can enter this in tolerance in the sketch... then back in modeling, you can click on icon that has 10,1 over 10,0.....in "tools" toolbar. This will (after updating) toggle model between mean and nominal..

GT Charly, is there an option to display MAX or MIN?
