    Existing 1950's era building

Does anyone know if the BOCA code included a 15psf partition load requirement in the early 1950s? I only have access to a 1975 BOCA code, which does have the provision. Thank you in advance.

    wood framed elevator shaft

I am designing a two story church where the design/build contractor is requesting to frame the elevator shaft out of wood to save cost. The architect thinks they can make it work per fire code. Does anyone see issues with this structurally as long as you design the wood posts at the rails...

    Theater Curtain Weight

Does anyone know how much in psf a typical high school theater curtain weighs? It looks like the velour kind in the existing theater we are remodeling.

wood sheathing to cold form studs

I took a look at IBC 2006 and it looks like they took the tables out, but I saw that it's in the IBC 2000.

wood sheathing to cold form studs

Does anyone know where to find the shear capacities of wood sheathing to cold form studs using screws?

    Seismic response coefficient Cs

Can anyone tell me what the seismic response coefficient of a structure means (Cs)? What does it represent? I know that V=CsxW, but does anyone know an explanation for Cs?

    partially enclosed vs enclosed

But what if the doors or windows are blown out? I have a call into the International Code Council. I left a message, so when they get back to me I'll let you know.

    partially enclosed vs enclosed

I am trying to determine if my large warehouse I am designing is classified as "enclosed" or "partially enclosed." There are some very large overhead doors in the project all in a row along one wall. Do you consider overhead door so be an "opening?"

    isolated beam

Does anyone know what the term "isolated beam" means in the ACI 2005 code section 8.10.4?

diamond cut in slab around steel column

This may seem like a very basic questions, but I have specified the standard detail of the diamond cut around a steel column in the concrete slab at the base for almost every steel project. In the diamond cut, we call out to put 1/2" expansion joint, and then a construction or control joint...

    Concrete deck expansion joint

I'm designing a 2 level concrete parking deck - post-tensioned beams with a cast-in-place slab spanning between. It is approximately 280 feet long by 180 feet wide. Do you recommend I put an expansion joint in?

    Plastic Hinges

Do any of you have any good reading material suggestions about this subject?

    Plastic Hinges

Also, when is it required to use plastic design? Which seismic design categories?

    Plastic Hinges

I have not done a whole lot of seismic design, so please excuse my ignorant questions. Which beams/columns should you strategically make elastic and which should you make plastic?

    early concrete loading

On our structural general notes page for our typical jobs, we usually put a note that says do not load concrete members before 14 days and before their specified 28 day strength is obtained. I have a contractor asking if he can load it before the 14 days. Is there an ACI document that I can...

    ASCE 7-5 seismic question

In ASCE 7-05 section 12.4.3, it talkes about including the seismic overstrength factor where conditions require it. When is that factor specifically required, and when do you use the normal seismic equations shown in section 12.4.2?

tying new foundation to existing foundation

What are your thoughts about tying a new building foundation wall to an existing foundation wall if the new building's superstructure is designed so it could stand alone if the existing building were to fall down? Do you recommend doweling or not? Does doweling help settlement issues?

    Mat foundation

Does anyone know of a good source of reference/resource for designing mat foundations?

    Building expansion joint or not?

Could you do the expansion joint with the double column line and provide a deck angle at each side and treat it like two separate buildings all together? So, no shear transfer through the two buildings? Would the precast panels need to provide an expansion joint as well? What are the issues...

    brick deflection

I've been looking through the code, and I cannot find the section in IBC that talks about the 0.7 factor. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
