Generic cad was discontinued many years ago so would
not appear in any survey. It was a far bigger prog than
LT and much more expensive at around $700AD when LT was
$150 when released.
Solidworks has a yearly fee ranging from $1400
to $2100 depending on package. This must be paid...
Bentley have discontinued Modeler which at the best was a
third rate product. I have owned a MS license since 95
and have watched them go backwards since then. I was told by
Bentley themselves that if I wanted a complex Mech Design

Microstation seems to be moving away
from the Mech side of things. They do
not have an alternative product as do Autocad
(Inventor). What are your comments?

plus there are too many systems on the market. I have used cad over 15 years and have been heavily involved with user groups. But that was in Melbourne...
I am in 2D because that is what the manual plus tutorials
recomend (see manual). None of the tutorials start in 3D
sketch. As for checking the manuals and tutorials - I have.
One of the problems is that SW use the same old tired
examples year in year out.

When drawing a line in Autocad I can draw it either
Horizontal, Vertical or unrestricted. I can switch
by using ortho (F8) Is there a command in SW which does the same? I have scoured the manual to no avail.

Sorry to be misleading but I did mean mitre the end
as opposed to chamfer. Also what is the difference (if any)
between surface and plane when it comes to cutting?

question. - If I have a piece of RHS - say 25x25x3,
which is the best way of putting a 45degree chamfer.
across the total end face of the member.
Is a plane the same as a surface when it comes to cutting the chamfer?

I have just had to reinstall Solid Works 2001 and have the following problem - When i draw a rectangle using
sketch and then try to extrude it everything locks
up. I am running windows 98.
