The setting that changes the way TerraModel links the dtm can be found under settings, link settings. You can change the maximum edge distance to create the links that you desire.

If the file that you are trying to insert is a unit block, then try to insert the block into TerraModel, and export the drawing to AutoCad. You can then open the drawing in AutoCad, and explode the block as you would with any other block.
