    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Thanks. Good stuff. I could not tell you what the exact laws are here for stamps and not. I can only tell you that the local jurisdictions where I am at have their own rules before giving a building permit. Joe blows home in xyz neighborhood certainly would not require it.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Let me ask you guys this. I am not trying to argue or fight. I know a lot of you think it’s fun to jump on the OP and what not. And that is fine, but i am generally trying to find the truth and protect myself. An architect produces a full set. It does not have structural. But it will have...

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Yes, they are overnight rentals. Tons of them here. When the occupancy load is over 12 and 20, there are different sets of rules. Plans sealed. Life safety and emergency lighting included. Sprinkled, etc. and yes, you enter IBC and it’s essentially treated as a commercial building. Also, the...

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

I am reviewing it. They are not structural plans. I am reviewing against IBC/IRC. It is required and they clearly state it can be done by an architect or engineer. I am not 100 percent clear on the legalities. And I admit I need to brush up on them. That is part of the reason I am here. I...

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Generic house plans with no member sizes

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

It is 100 percent required if occupant load is over 12 or if it’s an overnight rental and many counties require it for 5,000 sq ft or above.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Yes that is true. But I was making sure the other poster knew I was not literally taking a structural design/calcs and stamping them.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Based on the occupancy and if it’s an overnight rental, square footage, etc.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

I have never stamped another structural engineer's plans or calculations. These are generic/watered down house plans showing room sizes, windows, etc.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

I will check Tennessee laws. I know I need to be more prepared.

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

Sorry guys, I was not clear. I am a single member LLC. I am not saying I would not have liability. I am fine with all the liability. I am just curious how it works as far as someone else saying "that is my work, he cant stamp that," etc...Depending on occupancy and location/critical slope...

    Legal Thoughts on Stamping Plans

I get asked all the time to stamp plans. Normally they are internet plans or plans some draftsman has come up with with very little structural information. I do it and people get their permit, I get paid, everything is great. I fully realize I should seek out a lawyer and not some internet...

    I joist to steel beam

Thanks. That’s what I’m doing. I guess my first option in my head was to fill the flanges with a nailer and I didn’t want the bottom of the hanger below the beam

    I joist to steel beam

Ok well I don’t know what else to say to you. Thanks

    I joist to steel beam

It doesn’t control. It just seems weird going with a tiny w16 when a typical w10 works. Hence my whole creation of this thread asking others how they typically do this sort of thing. I can think of 3 or 4 ways. Just hoping for some revelation on what is the most common way.

    I joist to steel beam

Slender flanges. As in b/t ratio One side in this case and a wall on top

    I joist to steel beam

I have 16 inch I joists (framing package by local lumber yard) and I am designing steel beams to carry the loads. They don’t want the joists bearing on top. Trying to figure out the best method. I keep telling myself the beam needs to be as deep as the I joist, but a w16 will be borderline...

    Supplemental Reinforcing

Ok I haven’t looked that closely before. Pretty straightforward. If I have a bar with a u shape (2 90 degree turns) do I count that as one or two bars as far as anchor reinforcement? As long as my anchor reinforcement tensile strength exceeds my demand I am good? Of course there are a lot of...

    Supplemental Reinforcing

Thank you. I’ll jump back in this morning and take a look.

    Supplemental Reinforcing

Also, for shear calculations, what do you consider for h sub a (slab thickness) when you have a pedestal. Although I am sure whatever I end up with to make the tension work, the shear will be a laugher.
