Hi,
I have a very good FE package that designs to Eurocode head code or using several different National Annexes…except now for the country I’ve landed a project in!
In reality I know there’s not enough difference between the annex values to make or break anything. But to be compliant, as I’m...
I was hoping you’d say.. Any thoughts wood be appreciated..
I have used plenty of C24 timber here, but not in US. So firstly you’d want to make sure it complied with local requirements, which it probably doesn’t. Its perfectly fine in reality I’m sure but I couldn’t get the paperwork to use US...
Hi,
I’m looking for some typical details on TT slabs, they’re not overly popular in my part of the world. Anyone have some good references? Bearing details, connection details, tie detsils etc?
Many thanks
Hi there,
I was active on this forum for years.. One of my last threads on this forum was about getting out of engineering altogether..
I have worked in the industry for some time. I’ve designed some crazy shit other engineers shy’d away from and have worked in many corners of the work. I have...
I have a 3 storey RC frame, flat slab on columns, with infill masonry partition walls. The walls are non load bearing. The frame will be completed first and then the walls built within.
The architect wants the top of the walls grouted tight to the slab for fire/sound proofing reasons.
On one...
Saw this on the Reddit structural engineering forum.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Apparently its been built now.. Can’t say I’ll be copying the detail anytime soon!
@le99 - they’re not excuses. I do give them out, albeit relatively infrequently. These aren’t excuses, but simply reasons, based on past experience, I don’t like giving out calcs.
You’re not obliged to give them out. They are your own intellectual property.
I don’t like giving them out for the following reasons:
1) Some show-off will at some point accuse me of overdesign
2) Someone justifying their existence will accuse me of underdesign
Hi,
I have a flat slab structure. Its internal so no great temperature variation. How far do you normally push it before you introduce a movement joint? Any good reference documents?
Having considered this over the past while and discussed it with my wife and a close colleague, I’m going to stick it out - for now. Also booked into a therapist to help manage the classic Engineers anxiety over our worst fear.
Thank you all for your valuable input and thought provoking...
I like your stoic approach Koot. Its something I’ve read about lightly in the past but maybe I need to read it in a bit more detail.
I think i need “a good kick up the hole” as we say in Ireland.
I can’t help but wonder how many times the safety factors have saved us all.
I’m 40 with a 2 year old and a 6 year old.
I consider myself to be a good engineer, am well paid and have a good working environment.
Its the constant niggling feeling that somethings gone wrong on a job that I can’t hack anymore. Especially when I do find a mistake - I of course imagine what...
The pandemic has given me a change of perspective and a change of life priorities. That, in conjunction with engineer’s anxiety and sleepless nights sweating over calculations has me questioning whether or not I want to do this for the rest of my life.
Has anyone else experienced this?
What...
