Hi everyone,
When using different lateral resisting systems on a given storey, the Canadian code specifies for the base shear reduction factor (Rd, Ro) of the smallest system be used. So for example, a storey containing wood-based conventional shear walls and a CLT panel would have an R value...
Thanks everyone,
To reply each comment:
@XR250 - Indeed, it is a large load and is mostly derived from the location of the building. It's located in high seismic zone with a base shear of 232 kips. The plan would be to use an ATS rod system to deal with the uplift and storey...
Thanks Lexpatrie and Milkshakelake for the help, I agree that taking the entire wall's uplift resistance is a bit of a stretch.
So to bring further context and comment on the gigantic uplift, the structure is a 6-storey woodframe (no podium) and the wall previously mentioned is along shearline...
Hi everyone,

When determining the holdown forces at the ends of a wood shearwall segment, let's say a 29.5' long segment (example below), does the entire dead load applied resist the overturning forces?
Or could only a portion of dead load...
Bump, and a further explanation to help visualize:
Below is a typical floorplan of a multi-storey woodframe building. As an example, I've marked up shearwalls in the corridor as green to resist the E-W lateral forces. Where my question lies is that if I've chosen the green walls as shearwalls...
Hi Aesur,
Of course, the code reference is provided in the attached image and found in NBCC 2020 Part 4 4.1.8.10 5).
To further explain my question, I am looking for an explanation on why exterior walls of a multi-storey woodframe are sheathed when typically the lateral resisting shearwalls...
Hi Everyone,
When dealing with a multi-storey woodframe building, there are restrictions for 5-6 stories that require all shearwalls to be continuous from foundation to the roof. So to comply with this, typically shearwalls are located internally either as demising walls to suites or along the...
Hello!
I'm looking for some clarification on when to use either method of analysis (in NBC 2015) when dealing with wood. An example would be a 5-storey irregular wood structure:
1. From my understanding is that Equiv. Static Procedure can be followed if it meets the criteria outlined in Clause...

Hey!
Here I have the leg of a frame and I'm trying to model the frame members properly so that the unbraced length is accurate to what it is in real life. To explain, along the inside of the leg the member spans A+B and is only restrained transitionally INTO the page at the green joints shown...
