Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

The conclusion: someone else bought it. They supposedly had multiple offers, multiple times. Someone after us had an accepted offer for a little while but they too backed out and then someone else bought it.

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

Pretty much all the city said was 'ask a geotech'. I work for tech start ups, I am familiar with difficult clients with no money. Never seen anyone cry but I've also never seen a hill run through someone's house. I am not asking for a study or a report or any kind of definitive answer. Just...

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

Still haven't managed to get an appointment with a geotech. Is there a big shortage of geotechs? Half my city is built on hills, I'm surprised how hard it is to get a pre-purchase inspection. It is making me think no one bothers. Is it common for people to have geotechs look at hills before...

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

Thanks everyone for the help. You are all more helpful than the local pros. The one that replied just said they are busy until 2019. We are going to back out for now and try to book an appointment 2019 to assess that property if it's still available or maybe get a discussion about local geo...

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

Thanks for the replies everyone. I used GIS to measure slope of 33° (rise = 19m, run = 29m). Not sure how accurate that is but seems believable. The plateau that looks like an old road shows up in the contour lines. See picture 10 and 11 for contours. I'm going to try to upload 11 pictures...

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

Thank you for your reply. Measured 45° with my untrained eye. Actually looks a bit less than 45°. I could go out there with a laser rangefinder and get a more accurate estimate. It's pretty flat, doesn't look like there are any old slide paths and the old road has a consistent width (doesn't...

Conditions to Justify Residential Slope Assessment

I want to buy a house but there is a hill behind it. If it needs a retaining wall, I don't want to buy it. If it most likely needs a wall, I will probably walk away before spending money on assessment. I'm sure this is hard without seeing it in person but any rough guess would be appreciated...

    Object Tracker

I don't think they'd fit on a snail but there are lots of asset trackers out there that could work for larger animals. If you search for 'asset tracker' or 'bike tracker' you might find a good solution. If you want to DIY, Particle has a few versions of tracking kit that could work for you...

    Wearable Electronics Tips and Tricks

Thanks for the reply VE1BLL. 9 - Programming: I have ordered some cheap stuff to dissect. It took almost 3 months to arrive. They told me after a month it got returned because of lithium batteries and had to re-ship. I've found tear down videos on youtube to be more efficient. Not as much...

    Wearable Electronics Tips and Tricks

Thank you for the thorough response MacGyver 2 - Shipping: I'm not sure where they draw the line for calling things "activated" but it seems some basic functions don't count. For example LiPo batteries that come with a protection PCB installed inside the battery pack. That PCB has an IC on it...

    Wearable Electronics Tips and Tricks

Thank you for your feedback. I too have received all those things. What I wonder about is when I get wireless headphones with no access to the battery and the power button feels like it is just a momentary button. Does that button just wake up the MCU or does it trigger some kind of hardware...

    Wearable Electronics Tips and Tricks

Hello, I am making some wearable electronics and wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned while also checking with the pros here before I get too far into it. What tips or tricks do you have for making wearable electronics as small, low power and low cost as possible? Do you see any...

PLC Ladder Diagram to Arduino Sketch Conversion

That rotating link seems so much simpler and safer than making a linear actuator change speed throughout its stroke and turn around at adjustable end points. The one thing I liked about the linear actuator is it allowed us to try non-sinusoidal breath patterns but in the end that wasn't really...

PLC Ladder Diagram to Arduino Sketch Conversion

It's hard to bother with version tracking for such short code but I recommend saving a copy of your code every time you have a successful test. I found having an 'InProgress' folder and a 'Working' folder makes it a lot easier to revert to working code. Funny coincidence, my linear actuator...

PLC Ladder Diagram to Arduino Sketch Conversion

That does sound strange. Could be a copy-paste error, maybe you missed one of the changes you should make to the copy. That's where I usually screw up my copy-pasting. You could try locating the problem by commenting out portions of the position 2 code until the position 1 code starts...

PLC Ladder Diagram to Arduino Sketch Conversion

Just a random guess, if you are having timing problems it could be that you are using interrupts and putting too much code in them. I made that mistake on a similar project. Try to do as little as possible in the interrupts, just increment or toggle a variable and then check the variable in...

    Fast and Low Power Camera

Thank you for the suggestion but the client wants it to be very easy for non-techy people so we have to use common batteries. There are similar products on the market that meet those power requirements so it must be possible.
