Hi Steveh49
Thanks for the response, I do agree but this is not a real structure, it is just for my understanding.
The reason why I picked the point of rotation as shown on the sketch is because that the point i just wanted to calculate from.
But is the math correct or am i missing something...
Hello all
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following problem.
I am digging a hole in the ground that is 1.946m deep and erecting a wall.
I am trying to work out whether my overturning moment of the wall is greater than the sum of all the resisting moments.
Below is an image...
Hi BigH
Thanks for the response.
The soil type is dense gravel with a friction angle of 30 degrees. I used terzaghi bearing capacity theory to come up with the figure of 1238kN/m^2.
The figures do not represent reality.
I am having trouble in understanding when i have exceeded my safe soil...
Hi HTURKAK
Thank you for your response.
I am still not any the wiser.
Just to clarify the safe soil bearing capacity is 1238kN/m^3, rounded to 12000 kPa as per your response.
The weight of the foundation is 73.5kN as per your response.
The load I am applying to the foundation is 2420kg...
Hello all
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the following load bearing capacity problem:-
I have worked out that I have a safe soil bearing capacity of 1238kN/m^2
The area of my foundation is 5.883m^2
The total load I am applying to my foundation is 2420kg.
Just based on this...
Hello all
I was hoping someone could help point me in the right direction regarding the following problem.
I have 2 x tanks, 1 x cylindrical and the other rectangular of a given depth H that will be installed below ground with just the top of the tank exposed as shown below:-
These tanks...
Hello all
I was wondering if someone could help shed some light on an equation I found regarding obtaining the slope of sewage pipes in the following paper:-
The equation that is quoted to obtain the slope (equation 13) is given as:-
S = 4.65 * N^2 * D^(-4/3) * (q/Q)^(-1/2) * v^2
I...
Hello all
This may not sound like a civil question but I can assure you it is related to civil engineering.
I am trying to export elevation data from Google Earth Pro of a town in Peru.
I have obtained latitude, longitude and altitude data for the area I am interested in however I need to...
Hello all
I am trying to find or work out how to calculate the Fixed End Moment (FEM) for 2 x different point loads.
I have the following sketch:-
All of the FEM tables I have found don't have an example where there are 2 x different point loads and I was wondering if any once could shed...
Hello all
I was hoping someone could shed some light on the following question:-
I have a propped cantilever beam as shown below:-

Hello all
I was wondering if someone help clear up some confusion I have regarding different type of structures.
Below are 4 x diagrams of beams:-

I have seen these types before but...
Hello all
I wanted to ask about beams.
I have the following structure:-
My question is that given this structure is composed of 2 x different EI values (the first 4m being EI and the last 8m being 2EI) then what would the purpose of using 2 different EI materials on a beam?
I can only...
Hello all
I was hoping someone could help with the following:-
I have a pin jointed truss (all members are joined by frictionless pins and load is only applied to the joints), supported by 2 x pin jointed supports.
If my pin jointed structure was loaded solely at a joint with 200kN which...

Hello all
I was wondering if anyone could help explain how the Vertical reactions for the following structure were calculated.

I am able to calculate the Horizontal reactions. It is the vertical...
Hello all
I was wondering if any had a background or understanding on soil settlement/consolidation testing specifically oedometer testing.
My understanding is that we simply measure displacement vs time however I have been given the following data:-...

Thank you for your responses, I really appreciate it.
Just a follow on question.
The attached drawing (Picture 1) shows a member that support a UDL of 200kN.
The member sits directly on 3 x supports, to me I would describe these supports as roller supports?
If this is correct then they...
Hello all
Please dont shoot me down for asking this question as I know it maybe simple for most people.
I am trying to remove doubt from my mind regarding the 3 x types of supports and their reactions.
To me the types of support and their reaction forces are:-
Fixed Support = Vertical...
Hello all
I was hoping i could get some support on calculating re-action forces and creating a shear force and bending moment diagram.
Some of the examples i have worked on relate to a beam supported at either end.
But the example below has gotten me a little confused.
I have a 21m member...

Thank you, just needed to get this correct in my head.
I figured out that if i had used the equation:-
Youngs Modulus = (Force/Area) / [(Change in Length / Original Length)*100]
Then my units for Youngs modulus would be N/mm^2 * % which is very wrong indeed.
Thanks.
