Robot Structural Analysis - output for checking

Hi Celt 83, thank you for your response. It's in Ireland so using Eurocode. Robot is pretty good for Eurocode, I understand they focus on that more than the North American market.

Robot Structural Analysis - output for checking

Hi all, We're beginning a new project in the coming weeks and the intention from our company is to begin using Robot as the primary software for structural analysis. This is partially because of the cross functionality with REVIT (which we use on all our projects). In the past, we have done...

Truss - compression in top boom not matching tension in bottom boom!

JoshPlum, absolutely agree. Very simple to calculate by hand. I modeled it because it is a long truss and the loads in it are quite high. I wanted to get the specific loads in every node quickly so that individual connections could be rationalized. The problem was related to modelling.

Truss - compression in top boom not matching tension in bottom boom!

Thanks for your responses. I figured out what was up with the model, it was a simple fix - I needed to make one of the pinned supports a roller so as not to induce unwanted horizontal forces in the booms. I've attached the updated screen grab of the axial force diagram for anyone who would like...

Truss - compression in top boom not matching tension in bottom boom!

Thanks Dik, hope it works now!https://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=d73234e2-0ec6-48fb-9a0b-bf3c409c9327&file=Truss.docx

    Diaphragm/slury walls/secant pile wall design

Hi all, I'm sitting the Institute of Structural Engineer's exam for the United Kingdom in July and may be required to design diaphragm walls/secant pile walls depending on the question that comes up. Can anybody point me in the direction of a good resource to help me study for this, I haven't...

Truss - compression in top boom not matching tension in bottom boom!

Hi all, I would appreciate your help in explaining to me why the tension in the bottom chord is not the same value as the compression in the top chord? See attached for a screen grab of the model (disregard that the load values don't match on both sides (the program picks out the forces in...

    Braced frame deflection calculation

@motorcity nope, doing it on my own time for a project, I did a push over using a fictional unit load (I'll have higher deflection in reality). I enjoy trying to get these things out. I'm in the early years of my career and think it's important to have a good understanding of where results are...

    Braced frame deflection calculation

Hi all, I'm looking to calculate the relative stiffness of a number of braced steel frames on a 3 storey building using the unitl load method. I've come up with the bones of the derivation (I think it's correct!) but I'm finding that the defleciton that I'm getting for the frame differs from...

    Braced Frame Hand Analysis

Thanks very much everyone, that's fantastic. I now understand where the answer is coming from.

    Braced Frame Hand Analysis

Thank you for all of your responses. I plugged the numbers into the top formula and I got the correct answer (the STAAD answer)! Has anyone got a derivation for the formula by any chance/the reference for the book that the formula comes from? How is the Lbrace^3/Lhoriz^2 arrived at?

    Braced Frame Hand Analysis

Hi all, I'm doing hand calculations for a one storey braced building. I need to check the deflection of the building. To do so I've done what I thought was a simple hand check (attached). However, I did a very quick check with STAAD just to make sure my hand calc was accurate but the...

Question regarding compaction of backfill on native soil

Hello, I have received an RFV requesting that we change the backfill material that we've specified underneath footings from granular fill to stockpiled native material (pit run sand). The contractor has asked for the change because they are concerned that cross contamination between the native...

Design of platforms in an industrial building.

You should design them as building structures I would think. I'm more familiar with the Canadian code but the seismic forces for non-structural components tend to be higher than those derived from the equivalent static shear method (energy dissipation due to ductility etc is not accounted for)...

    Long Term Deflection of Grating

Thank you guys. Dickseweeat you're right - that's the basis for the test as I understand it. We went with the testing procedures set out in ASTM D790. To cover ourselves we've added steel under the grating at the locations where point loads are supported (so even if the grating is inadequate...

    Long Term Deflection of Grating

Thank you very much. I have a CD for the ASTM Standards in Building Codes but it doesn't carry this standard. Instead I found the D2990-01 version. I think that will be sufficent for my needs right now. Again, thank you.

    Long Term Deflection of Grating

Hello, I'm currently working on a project that has been going on for a number of years. The specs were written a few years back (before I came to this company). Our Fiberglass Pultruded Grating spec asks that 'certified test results verifying the long term deflection criteria for a seven day...
