What exactly is the phenomenon that occurs on a supercharged muscle car to make this sound at idle?

take this video for example www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w9_bzxCdsc The way the engine sort of revs up and then exhales, what is this? I've always referred to this as blower surge but someone recently challenged me and told me its just the duration of the cam and all its doing is loping. Is this...

Any disadvantages to a 2 piece cylinder head like this?

saw this at SEMA a few weeks ago and was really entertained by it. For some reason though the 2 piece design really bothers me... Any major disadvantages to this design that could be problematic in the future? Link

Looking for an unusual pipe. 8" ID with 12" flange and 10.5" BC

Don't really know the application of it. I just heard it would be submerged in water and I think there was going to be some water level monitoring system at the bottom. I was told not to worry about the notch in the side. Basically someone from the field brought it into the office and asked...

Looking for an unusual pipe. 8" ID with 12" flange and 10.5" BC

This ductile iron pipe is connected with others vertically in water. Doesn't look like anything standard. Most 8" pipes have an 11.75" diameter bolt center and a 13.50" flange. Everyone at work is stumped! [ponder]

How to determine your electrical rate?

Stupid question and I'm not even sure this is the forums to discuss this. Anyhow the power provider is charging us $.041/kWh and the distribution company is charging us a distribution facilities charge, an IL electricity distribution charge and some other taxes. Is $.041/kWh my rate (seems...

Can LED light bulbs be a direct replacement for Metal-Halides?

I'm trying to lower my company's energy usage and they have been pushing for LED lighting for a while now. The biggest improvements will be on the parking lot lights but that is a professional job. Right outside the front door we have a canopy with M90 100W MG lamps in a can light fixture...

Why raise the ground level and THEN dig trenches for pipes when you can just bury them?

My company is reclaiming an old quarry for real estate development and a storm water bypass sewer system consisting of 84" RCP needs to be installed. I don't understand why they are going to fill the quarry up with soil first to the proposed ground elevation and then go back to dig trenches up...

Does the output frequency of an induction generator vary with rpm?

This is in regards to a small (35-50kW) wind turbine my company is looking at putting up to reduce electrical costs. The unit (Endurance E-3120) uses an induction machine and can produce electricity onto the power grid without using inverters. So I guess I was wondering how it would be able to...

Why does the torque output of a DC motor decrease linearly with RPM?

Yea your right mike I did my question wrong, I meant why does torque decrease as rpm increases. I guess the correct way of stating the relationship is that torque and rpm of a DC motor are inversely proportional? So how about brushless DC or PM AC motors? Is it the same deal?

Why does the torque output of a DC motor decrease linearly with RPM?

I know this applies to brushed DC motors and I think it applies to brushless as well?

    Induction motors

Wow a lot of information here that's above my understanding. I have a lot of learning to do! Mikekilroy that setup with twin 132kw motors sounds wicked! Where can I find more info on it?

High torque electric golf cart using high farad capacitors

So the vehicle isn't going to use any batteries? Something you have to keep in mind is that a capacitors capacitance (farads) adds inversely in series. So four 2 farad caps in series would not have a total capacitance of 8 farads. The total charge may still be 4x though. The energy stored in the...

    Induction motors

I've been looking at used industrial motors that could work to power an electric car and it seems like 90% of the motors used in industry are induction type, why is this? My guess is simplicity, but aren't other types of motors more efficient or have better torque curves? I would think permanent...
