Is any one familiar with Scaffold Design.
What is the code of record??. Can any one share some info on this or if you guys have some design material/any publication can you guys share that info.
@racookpe1978 (Nuclear)
No they are two flat plates together. I am concerned is about severe indentation due to heavy torque. like bolt punching through the softer metal.
@wannabeSE (Civil/Environmental)
YEs that's true, but they refer back to AISC pretensioning values. That is where I feel...
@upk
A325 are high strength bolts, they cannot be used as anchors
per AISC, preferred anchor bolts are F1554 gr 36, Gr 55
They cannot be called with different name to make it anchors. A325 chem composition is different from F1554
Thanks for your time
@Tmoose
grip length is 7/8 in. Ambient temperatures are 70-120 F
@JAE
In recent past I ended up dealing with fabricators driller oversized holes and then PM asking me to qualify the bolts. So I am trying to be conservative.
Slip critical works on AL if we prepare the...
@upk
First check if the chemical anchors or any hilti anchors are compatible to the seismic zones you are working on. This is very important, some anchors cannot be used in SDC D, E, F.
Note that Adhesive anchors have different strength reduction factors that more conservative (ACI 318-11)
I...
Hello Frs,
To counter weight concerns on slab, I am design a braced frame structure with Aluminum. Initially for all the fasteners I specified Al alloy 2024 but due to lead time/procurement issues, I have to use A325 Bolts.
Now the issue is, for slip critical connection considering 3/4 in dia...
@Buggar,
That's a good legal point and may be true if the issue is major and there is no possible fix either through field mods or engg judgment.
Also as you know engineering and construction work together, I just cannot burn them for a small discrepancy like this.
In this case by talking to...
@Lomarandil
yes I considered the impact of slotting in the design, I was just concerned about larger than code prescribed holes.
I will mention about welding the field washer. they will provide field welded washers
KootK,
//This is similar to standard oversized base plate holes//
But standard oversize holes are only 1/16 in larger than ordinary hole right? this is 3/16 in larger. (please correct me if I am wrong)
//The "accident" may have been a very deliberate attempt to introduce some field...
I am having a field issue with slotted hole dimensions. This is for base plate related to a 20 ft light post in a parking lot
The anchors are 1 in dia, so I specified 1 1/16 in x 2.5 in slotted holes.
By mistake filed drilled 1 1/4 x 2.5 and now they are asking me if I can buy them off. They...
@mike20793
I am not violating the Fixed base assumption. that fixed base assumption is between superstructure and foundation, not between foundation and soil.
The only reason, to neglect the wt of foundation in multi-story bldg is, its a negligible wt compared to total super structure wt, not...
SE requirements in IL are horrible,
That is the reason I am planning to take my SE in TX. Even thought it is not called "SE" right now, it will be soon reconized as SE.
Its the same 16 hr SE exam thou

Thank you for ur input. I have that lindberg book, but I wanted similar statement from IBC or CBC (both are silent).
Also that may be ok for a multi story building as the foundation weight is relatively small. If I am designing a foundation for equipment (large), then i cannot agree...
KootK,
I am happy that all u guys spent time on this. I will let you all know.

The rationale I heard differed from each engineer to other. Some said it's too conservative.
One of the better reason from a senior was, post seismic tests indicated not much sliding on foundations, but...
