Help me understand the difference between crippling and buckling

Take a plastic drinking straw and press on it lightly and you can watch it bow slightly, let the pressure off, the straw shouldn't have permanently been damaged if you just put enough pressure on to see a slight bowing. Now if you continue increasing the pressure you put on the straw it will...

Where did this equation come from? Bent sheet metal Z

Not a student, I was reviewing a young engineers report and I wanted to make sure he didn't plop out an equation that I did not know about for bent sheet metal forms. I realized this morning what I was looking at was actually the equation for bending in a straight member. I was so use to...

Case grounding requirement of electronic equipment in composite aircraft.

That is going to be very difficult if not impossible. Are we talking commercial, military or general aviation here? If it is something that has to pass rigorous EMI testing I just don't see that as possible. Once EMI gets onto something it has to bleed off somewhere or it will couple onto...

Where did this equation come from? Bent sheet metal Z

The part in question is a piece of sheet metal bent into a Z with two 90 degree angles. The top part is against a vertical wall and is attached via bolts, the it sticks out from the wall and then bends downward at 90 degrees with a mass hanging off of it. Someone sent me an analysis of the...

Help me understand the difference between crippling and buckling

You can buckle without plastic deformation, granted the window is small but still there. Crippling is after the yield strength of the structure has been exceeded and it is permanently buckled. Generally we are talking about things like Z or J channels as reinforcement for skins.
