    Utility Pole - Push/Bracing Pole

Hey, I am working on trying to model a push pole to replace a downguy for a utility pole, our design software is not capable of modeling a push pole. Initially I modeled it simply by determining the static forces that apply to the guy from the primary and neutral conductors and then...

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

SRE - I would consider it more of a foundation than a floor. Had planned on no joints in the slabs. With just have expansion joints between the slabs with no rebar to tie the pads together. My plan so far was to use Ringo - Anderson and ACI 360 as a reference for determining the slab thickness...

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

SRE - Do you have any suggestions on design references I should look at? Currently I have a copy of ACI 360 on order and have a copy of Designing Floor Slabs On Grade, Ringo & Anderson.

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

SRE - Haha yeah I am definitely in a support role here. I am going to discuss with the user first before proceeding. I was just curious if there would be any unforseen issues. I believe it's mostly for weed control, but would still have all pads adjoining each other. Just not connected...

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

All thank you for your replys. SRE as an alternative I was thinking of designing as three separate pads with joints, but no reinforcing steel to join the pads. I believe this would avoid issues of unequal loading.

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

Ah, thanks. I'm a young engineer new to the utility field. The design is being done in the United States. Thanks

Pad Mount Transformer Slab on Grade

Hey, I am working on designing a slab on grade for three pad mount transformers. The desire is to have all three on the same pad. Waiting on manufacture drawing to determine loading. Also requested any soil info we have. I ordered an ACI 360 book to start. Should there be any other manuals I...

Infer Vertical Loading on Wood Beam

    Calculations herehttp://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=aef8741f-2557-45de-98be-3c0aa1cc75f5&file=20150910_102319.jpg

Infer Vertical Loading on Wood Beam

Ha, thanks. Okay had open my materials book. Don't have a NDS book on hand right now. Im not sure if I did the calcs correctly. Our maximum longitudinal force was 10578 pounds. In vertical loading we had 3641 pounds. When I do the calculations to infer the vertical loading I get a force that...

Infer Vertical Loading on Wood Beam

I have a question regarding determining the ultimate vertical loading of a wood beam. I have testing data to start. In the test its three planks of wood that are layed horizontally on top of each other. A balanced horizontal longitudinal load is applied simitaniously at 4 locations on the beam...

    Statics Review

Hey, I started a new job recently and for it I'd like to review and refresh my statics skills. I've been looking back through my statics book as a start, but wanted to know if there were any spreadsheets or software available for loading beams to determine moment and shear forces at an arbitrary...

    Advice for a young engineer

Hey just wanted to follow up about my experience from starting at my new position. I started yesterday, so now I am just getting my feet wet. I think I'll be in a state of shell shock for a little while lol. I am currently learning our design software and to understand the acronyms and...

    Advice for a young engineer

Interesting I'll look into more. I'm located in Ohio, so looking at that a design for the foundation would have to be signed off by a PE. "unless the same involves the public welfare or the safeguarding of life" But it doesn't look to be an exhaustive list so I'll research some more...

    Advice for a young engineer

Yeah I would think any foundation design would be signed off by a PE. From my understanding of the position I would be supporting the design software used by the field engineers. So helping to provide training in using the software and performing calcs to validate the result of the program...

    Benchmark post processing error

Hey guys, I have been trained through the military for some surveying, but real world experience. I am trying to establish a benchmark for doing some RTK surveys around out facility. This benchmark will be for internal use only. Our equipment is rather old, a zephyer geodetic (no gnss)...

    Advice for a young engineer

Hello everyone! Background: I previous posted on here before about design for electric distribution pole. I interviewed for a position at a large utility company and believe I might be offered the position. The position would mainly involve distribution pole foundation design (software...

    Looking for a little help

I am interviewing with an electric utility company and believe it to have great career potential. I'm curious if there is a method, assuming arbitrary values, that one could determine the forces acting on a distribution pole and if the soil or other material it is directly embedded into would...

    Looking for a little help

The position I am interviewing for is an entry level civil engineering position. I agree on both accounts; I would need a mentor starting at this new company and farming out the work initially would be the best option. I have exposure to specs and codes through both of my current occupations...

    Looking for a little help

Thanks for the reply! I understand distribution pole typically do not have foundations. A guy wire/soil anchor would be placed where applicable; some areas do call for free standing poles either due to obstructions or landowner restrictions. So I am looking at a free standing pole, where a...
