    Gear speed

2000-2500 ft./min has always been a good rule of thumb for splash systems. Actual testing above 2500 is highly recommended. The major problem with speeds above 2500 ft./min is the speed of the gears will cut a channel in the oil bath generating excess heat caused by lack of lubrication and...

Need inputs for controlling heat treat distortion

Ways of minimizing distortion on 8620 Material: 1) rough machine - stress relieve - machine - carburize 2) marquench (use hot oil) 3) quench plug or tool for carburizing 4) vacuum carburize

Need information on composite spline plug gages

Blinddeafmute101, What is the standard for the spline you need to measure? Different standards will call out different spline tolerances as well as gage tolerances. One of the standards we manufacture to is ANSI B92.1-1970. There are gage manufacturing tolerances in that spec.. Gary

    Testing Radius of gears

RUSO, The test radius of a gear is the an old call out. It is the dimension used to set up a double flank checker (at tight mesh) for tooth-to-tooth and total composite checking with a master gear. The test radius of the gear would have a high and low limit based on how much backlash was...

Noise is not the same in both direction

robindbois, Runout, involute error, lead error, spacing error can all lead to noise. I have found lead error as well as runout to be a cause for noise levels to sound different in opposite directions. My recommendation is to have the gears checked for the above errors first. Helical gear will be...

Extreme pitting on an unhardened pinion, need help

The first thing I would do is check the involute form for a possible interference condition. If the tip of the gear (addendum) is heavily contacting the SAP (start of active profile) that would cause your condition. The manufacturer should have an involute machine to check this.
