    Replacing Olets

Thanks for the replies. I agree with your sentiments LI and MJCronin.

    Replacing Olets

Hello XL83NL, This is a post-construction weld, so yes, 31.3 would not apply and API 570 or PCC-2 would be referenced. I am looking from a welding and mechanical point of view and wanting to know what the industry norm is when replacing Olets and nipples on process piping. Service: Jet fuel...

    Replacing Olets

When replacing a CS 3/4" Thredolet with a 3/4" Sockolet, are there any special precautions to take? Is making up a new pup piece necessary? Run pipe size is 8" schedule 40. I know it is recommended to not weld over previously heat-affected zones in certain situations. The reason we are going...

ASME B31.3 302.3.2(f) Unlisted Materials confusion

Your assumption is correct LI and this one is a backup to a block valve. Thanks for the replys everyone.

ASME B31.3 302.3.2(f) Unlisted Materials confusion

I was asked by our maintenance personnel if using a 4" paddle blind made out of A572 Gr. 50 material was okay. Since it is not a B16.48 blind, I was following ASME B31.3 para. 304.5.3 to make sure the thickness was adequate for the required pressure and temperature. Unfortunately, A572 Gr. 50 is...

Indirect natural gas fired (modine type) building heaters in process buildings

Thanks for the replys. The gas is natural gas at around 600 psig. Chicopee, I'll have to see if radiant heat is an option. I am not familiar with those types of heaters. Electric heat would be the safest and easiest but obviously the most costly.

Indirect natural gas fired (modine type) building heaters in process buildings

We have some buildings in a gas processing plant that are unable to be heated with steam like all of the other building in the process area. If an adequately ventilated building is electrically unclassified as determined by API RP 500, is it safe to use a natural gas Modine heater, or do most...

    Maintaining Track of my notes

OneNote has helped me track everything from daily maintenance to small and large projects. I still have a notebook to write in that I eventually transfer to OneNote after the day or week. Being able to search, collaborate, and attach pictures makes OneNote invaluable.

Large water storage tank Immersion heater for freeze protection

Hello, I wanted to get your thoughts on a task I am dealing with and make sure as an entry engineer I am asking the right questions before I continue to proceed. Background: We have an API 650 50,000 bbl water storage tank (110' x 30') built in 1967 that is used for firewater and all other...

    Pig Launcher Oil Removal

Thanks guys, I like the idea of the portable air powered pump. The injection pump is looking more favorable than the sump design the more I think about it (Less piping, no risk of sump leaking to soil, no level alarms).

    Pig Launcher Oil Removal

Hello, I am currently tasked with improving our pig launcher oil removal methods and wanted to see how other pipeline operators do it. We currently have a 12" crude line with a 16" diameter launcher that collects about 115 gallons of crude after a pig launch. The current procedure is to hook...

    Master degree in which field?

Some folks I have encountered (oil & gas industry) whose goal was to always get into project engineering earned their Master of Science in Project Management, but most the time project engineers were discipline engineers who were successful in that role and naturally moved into a project role.

Spiral Wound Gaskets on Pressurized Lube Oil Systems

One guy mentioned that graphite can contaminate the lube oil, but I could never find any source to verify that. Co-workers are worried that we have a non-compliant API614 lube oil system. Thank you for the reassurance. I do not see an issue with it either especially since many of our lube...

Spiral Wound Gaskets on Pressurized Lube Oil Systems

What are the risks of spiral wound gaskets with graphite filler in compressor and motor bearing lube oil service? I know API 614 says that for lube oil systems under ANSI class 300: flat, non-asbestos type and, for ANSI class 600: spiral wound with non-asbestos filler, 304 or 316 wingdings and...

    Filtering shower water

Thanks for the reply's. I am looking into nano filters and an activated carbon filter to filter out bacteria and body secretions. I also think UV lights could be easily used to kill bacteria. Chlorine could also be used to kill bacteria too. This project is very preliminary, but two companies...

    Filtering shower water

Hello, I am currently working on a small project for dry cabins in Alaska without running water. The cabin is heated using a wood stove, so I am using that to heat the shower water. I want to use a closed loop shower system where I can filter the shower water after use and keep reusing it for a...
