Special inspector in a tough spot

Thanks for the discussion everyone. Interesting and I appreciate it. I spoke with the GC today and explained to the Super that the building code instructs me to report the unaddressed discrepancies to the engineer of record and the building official. He later phoned me to say that the engineer...

Special inspector in a tough spot

That is exactly what my thought was Ingenuity. To do my work properly I have to 'over the head' of our client.

AND if they don't notify the engineer I will have to.

Special inspector in a tough spot

That is true. Special Inspectors are NOT to be hired by the GC but that is the situation here i guess. I'm going to talk to the GC about this tomorrow and let them know they need to let the engineer know about this problem if they can't get it corrected. I suppose it is tough because I don't...

Special inspector in a tough spot

My company was hired to perform special inspection by a general contractor. I am inspecting grade beams that tie into moment frame columns. The moment frame columns have #7 rebar welded to them. The #7 bars are to be lap spliced to the grade beam bars and the lap length is to done "per plan...

    Concrete fall height

I have seen the vibratory they are going to use. It is 20' long with a 3"(?) Head. Just or of curiosity, what is the diameter of those snorkel hoses? I think it would have to be pretty narrow to get down inside some of these walls with double curtain rebar.

    Concrete fall height

Thank You! VERY helpful links that add good perspective. I printed all of them for my reference collection. It looks like ACI is mainly concerned about segregation caused by lateral movement of concrete.

    Concrete fall height

Hello all... I'm working as a special inspector on a project where there are 14' tall PCC walls, 12" thick, with double curtain rebar. The contractor plans on forming up the walls to full height and then placing concrete. There is nothing in the project plans that limit fall height for concrete...

Removing laitance from the top of footing for CMU retaining wall

Thanks all for the posts! BUGGAR is right...they used a 'scabbler'. The contractor had to rent one and spent a day removing laitance from the retaining wall footings. To me, ACI 318 stated pretty plainly that this was required. But in my limited instances in dealing with contractors they made me...

Removing laitance from the top of footing for CMU retaining wall

Without the code books in front of me, I'm pretty sure it needs to be removed whenever there is a cold joint--might be wrong on that though. I think it is to ensure that the fresh concrete bonds to the concrete already is place. In my pretty limited experiences I've seen contractors use a bush...

Removing laitance from the top of footing for CMU retaining wall

I'm brand new to this site and kind of new to special inspection. I have a lot of questions! I was called out to do a special inspection for a CMU retaining wall. The project plans gave the contractor the option to wet set the first course of block into fresh concrete after the footing had been...
