    Edge distance vs material thickness

@SWComposites: no initial design or repair, it's just a generic theoretical question.

    Edge distance vs material thickness

Thanks for your comments. I did a simple static SolidWorks simulation, this does show that ED has a greater effect on the thinner member of the joint.

    Edge distance vs material thickness

Hi all, Just a generic theoretical question: There is a general rule that the edge distance of a fastener should be at least 2 times the diameter of the fastener (measured from the center of the fastener), even better when adding a tolerance value on top of the 2D value. Imagine a joint of 2...

    Upswept wingtip question

HI all, I'm finishing the wingtips of my kit airplane. With help of a laser I made sure the trailing edges of both wings are perfectly level and both wings have the same angle of incidence. However, the fiberglass parts are not 100% identical. One wingtip is about 12 mm ~ 0.5 inch higher...

    NAS bolt with tension nut

Many thanks Wil. I checked the inside dia of the nut and can confirm that it has UNJF threads since UNJF has a larger inside dia than a UNF threads.

    NAS bolt with tension nut

Please have a look at my previous posts. It seems that AN365-1032A was replaced by MS365-1032A and later, in 1993, replaced by MS210443N3. This MS210443N3 has UNJC threads. When you order AN365-1032A at Aircraft Spruce, you will get MS210443N3. So my conclusion is that when using the old name...

    NAS bolt with tension nut

I found in the MS21044 specification the note that: Link to the spec. With that I conclude that AN365-1032 does not exist anymore and is replaced by MS21044N3, which has the UNJC thread, so is compatible with the NAS6603 bolt. Is this conclusion correct?

    NAS bolt with tension nut

Many thanks for your feedback. About the threads, its clear now that an UNF but doesn't belong to an UNJF bolt due to the different shape at the root: I searched if there's a nut with the same thread as the NAS6603 bolt and found MS21044, dash number N3 has a thread of 1900-32UNJF-3A, which...

    NAS bolt with tension nut

Would anyone be so nice to share their thoughts about this? The beginning of the threaded part of the bolt is allowed to have 2 incomplete threads. I need more than 1 full turn before runout. So if the bolt really has 2 incomplete threads the nut would start in the second incomplete thread. But...

    NAS bolt with tension nut

Hi all, Follow up on my previous thread Link and a closed thread Link. I have a NAS6603-16 bolt and an AN365-1032 tension nut with this setup: AN-960L thin washer: 0.03125" Material: 0.95276" AN960-10 washer: 0.06250" Total: 1,04651" The NAS6603-16 has a grip length of 1" and T (thread...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

Many thanks for sharing this document. No shim is needed because the skins are riveted through the upper layer, the second layer has larger holes so that the tail of the rivet fits in and can be pulled. You stated in one of your previous replies that you don't like AN3 in a spar and prefer...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

Here the first rib will be attached with 5 rivets, not through the whole spar but only through the outer plate. The upper and bottom hole of that rib will be attached with the same AN3 bolts through the the complete spar. Furthermore a tank-attach-bracket with be attached with 2 AN3 bolts. So in...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

Bizar story, thanks for sharing! I'm not gonna change anything on this kit before 100% approval of the kit manufacturer. They tell me not to worry "there was never a problem with this design", but I do worry and many posts in this thread confirm my worries. It feels like dead end.

    AN3 hole tolerance question

    To answer those questions about time: - 100 hours / year - 25 years in service About max loads: - 700 kg mtow - limit load factor: normal category -> 3.8 - safety margin: 1.5? - wing span 9.2 mtr - fuselage: 4 mtr wing span Very rough calculation: 700 kg * 3.8 * 1.5 = 3990 kg total / 2 => 1995...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

Thanks again Sorry typo, should be AN365 What would be better in my case: oversize NAS66XX or oversize Hi-Lok? Which reamer do you mean for Hi-Lok?

    AN3 hole tolerance question

Thanks for all replies [smile] Also with AN173 I would have sloppy holes: AN173: 0.1885 - 0.1895 inch Predrilled holes: 0.1900 - 0.1950 inch AN173 is not available as oversize (-X), but NAS6603 is: 0.2016 - 0.2026 inch. I could use a 0.2026 reamer and manual ream the holes. What would be the...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

They have 1 protruding thread. There is only a washer under the nut, not under the head; my technical counselor preferred to add a washer also under the head and use a longer bolt AN3-13 instead of AN3-12. I did a test fit and by adding an extra thin washer I have this situation, which is...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

@LiftDivergence I've asked the kit manufacturer and the reply was that the holes are "okay"... On the drawings, I have, no hole dimensions are written, so that I don't know. Based on the info I have, a 3/16 or #12 drill/reamer should be used for AN3: 0.1875 - 0.1890 inch So the pre-drilled...

    AN3 hole tolerance question

hi all, I'm working on the wing spars of a 2 seats light kit airplane. The spars are already drilled and assembled by the factory. Here an image of the root part: I found out that the thread-lock-paint on some AN3 bolts was broken, so I wanted to re-torque them. But I was surprised that the...
