What are the best practices for creating work instructions for products with lots of variants?

The company I work for makes a lot of products that are high-mix low-volume type. An example would be a cable with connectors on both ends. For any particular cable you can have a custom length and then each end could be terminated by several choices of connecors/ferrules etc. So variant...

Software to do Quality Control inspection on final products? Would Google or Microsoft Forms work?

Is there a software where you could set up a checklist/questionnaire that goes through a series of checks to ensure a final product passes and can be shipped to a customer? The data/images would then be saved to a spreadsheet or database as a record for the customer order. Google Forms seems...

What software is typically used to manage a company's product structures and configurations?

Thanks for the reply, CWB1! After looking into PLM, it appears to be a big deal to implement, similar to ERP. We currently "do" PLM with docs and spreadsheets, which is becoming a hassle. Is there a good stepping stone before investing/adopting a PLM system?

What software is typically used to manage a company's product structures and configurations?

Hi everyone, I currently work for a small company (10-20) that is seeing a lot of growth in its product line. With that growth we're spinning off configurations of our current products to new customers and industries. This is leading to a lot of "similar but different" products to manage. What...

Difference between First Article Inspection and incoming inspections of regular parts

Hi all, I'm working on developing an internal QC process at my company and was wondering how you typically handle incoming inspection of parts. I noticed that forms for AS9102B seem to be set up for a single part. In the event of sampling a percentage of parts from the order, are additional...

How do you structure BoMs for infinitely variable products, such as cables?

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some guidance/resources on how to structure BoMs for products such as cables where the customer can choose the length and how each side could be terminated. The company I'm at is relatively small, but we're growing. With this growth we're reviewing how we...

    Threaded hole perpendicularity callout

chez311, Thank you for the example image. I appreciate the help. I think the projected zone standard that you and Kedu suggested would be my best bet going forward.

    Threaded hole perpendicularity callout

Kedu, chez311, Thank you for the responses. The perpendicularity of the threaded holes is more for looks than function. The assembly is a custom vacuum application for a customer where feedthroughs (plugs) are mounted to the plate. When properly installed, the feedthroughs sit about 35mm above...

    Threaded hole perpendicularity callout

Hi All, I'm currently designing a plate that has NPT threads. Custom NPT plugs thread into the holes and stick out about 35mm from the surface. When the first article came back and assembled with the plugs, I noticed that one of the plugs is visibly angled off axis when threaded into the hole...
