Hi Guys
I am currently learning to use Gridap.
How many of you have actually used open source PDE solvers for real engineering work? (FEnics, SfePy, Gridap etc...)
Just curious since some of these open source solvers have really amazing functionality.
Hi Guys
Please refer to the attached images.
The PSD has been developed using initial conditions on the "theta" coordinate for a coupled spring pendulum
the natural frequency of the spring system is 2.72Hz and of the pendulum motion is 1.36Hz. The parameters are sized such that parametric...
Hi Guys
Can someone please share a good reference for nonlinear analysis of spring elements?
I currently own a copy of Krenk's nonlinear book which does not specifically discuss springs.
Looking to implement the procedures in Matlab/Octave, to perform nonlinear transient analysis
Kind regards...
Strand7 can only do FEA. If you get the API you can program the required codes into the software.
If you are looking for something similar to Strand7 that has codes I would suggest Lusas.
I messed around with it for a short time, the biggest downfall is it's poor interface and as with any...
Hi Jmggks
I have done a similar design on numerous occasions.
Previously I have also developed a linear time interval over which the force acts and thereafter used my own FEA code to perform the analysis transiently as this also gives a decent indication of what happens after the impact. This...
Hi guys
I am busy with a proposal for my MSC, and struggling to find mechanical systems which use resonance in order to function or perform better. Looking for something whereby resonance is induced and maintained even when parameters are changed during operation.
A bit vauge but I would...
@m_struct
Why don't you consider something like Mecway or Lisa?
They don't have design capabilities but you can interface your own easily.
From an analysis perspective they will be much better.
Thanks guys for all the comments. The symbol seems to come on every time the compressor runs.
I think the issue may be with the fact the unit has been overfilled with gas...
I can see the compressor unit which I assume is the chiller unit. Refer to the attached image. That sits on the slab of my patio area.
I can't get to the fan, it's in my roof and there is very little space to get there. I think the roof tiles were removed for the installation...
@LittleInch unfortunately I have no manual. The keypad has no infirmation on it. Went into the roof today, and honestly it's a mess I couldn't navigate to where the fan sits either.
The guys who came in to look at the a/c couldn't give me much information with regards to a brand.
It was my...
Hi Guys
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I recently purchased a new home with a central aircon.
We had a faulty capacitor which was fixed however during troubleshooting the problem a dummy capacitor was put in, and the aircon worked very well. Cooled down the house significantly.
Thereafter...
Greetings FEA Gods
Has anyone had any success installing Nastran-95 on a raspberry Pi?
If so please post your procedure to get it up and running.
Kind regards

Greetings Structural Gods
In all structural books I have looked at (mechanical and structural) it seems that the welds are always taken as a unit thickness (1mm), and this is used to develop the required mechanical properties.
I have been messing around with a program I developed, taking the...
Hi Guys
I have been developing a FEM toolbox on Octave.
With regards to CST elements, the element stresses can be calculated using DBq.
The stresses attained can be takes as the stress at the centroid of the element.
How can one calculate the nodal stresses from the element stress?
Hi Sarakahmed
I use Strand7 and Mecway, the only other alternative that I would consider is Lusas.
I have briefly messed around with Prokon, it is one of the worst packages I have ever used in my life.
I was actually offered to interview for a position at Prokon (about 4 years ago) which I...
The centrifugal forces should be balanced, however with uneven wearing of the components cause small amounts of dynamic effects may come into play. Personally I think this would be an accidental load. For my dewatering pontoon designs I normally checked a load case with the break down torque of...
Hi Megastructures
I generally use non-linear static or non-linear transient analysis when doing complex connection designs, this is only done for very non standard connections on structures. I do believe that in certain cases a linear static is conservative. I deal with a lot of dynamics and...
