    Boats without alternators

Curious if anyone can tell me how boats without alternators charge their batteries? Also wondering if there is a way to charge deep cycle batteries while at sea?

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

I don't think a car type alternator would be the best solution here. I am not looking to rewrite conversation of energy. I am trying to find the best possible solution. Although an alternator does solve the variable speed problem, it also requires much more torque. I digging into axial flux...

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

It seems like it must be something different than efficiency. Its exactly 33 Hz in each case not matter the power of the prime mover.

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

This is a 240 v 60hz 10 amp motor. The wanco AB20L powering a test load 120v 500 watt heater. The real load will be a bank of 12 volt batteries wired to be 24 volt. I would like to avoid gears/ pulley. I’m not sure why hertz stays the same with varying input to prime mover. Would the pulley...

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

    Accidently deleted your post. Apologize I had data from a different test in the previous post. Here is the correct data: With load: 150 psi / 55 volts / 0.9 amps / 33 Hz 170 psi / 78 volts / 2.1 amps / 33 Hz 190 psi / 112 volts / 4.1 amps / 33 Hz Without load: 150 psi / 85 volts /...

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

TugBoat - I have recorded data with the generator under load, using a 500 watt heater. The generator is being spun using pressurized air as the prime mover. The 63 Hz I mentioned is at an inlet of 200 psi (current max). The data I have recorded is with varying prime mover pressure (150 - 200...

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

I know I am deviating from the original intention of this thread, but curious as to why the need for capacitor excitation on a generator. What would happen if the capacitors were smaller (or bigger) or not there at all? I appreciate the lesson

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

Thanks Waross. I will look for the switch-mode charger. As for the UFRO feature. The generator (wanco AB30L) does drop voltage as frequency drops, but I thought that was simply a product of lower RPM. Am I mistaken and it is actually a feature that is built in?

Varying Speed AC Generator to Steady DC

Hi all. I have a 240 volt, 10 Amp AC generator being powered by excess compressed air that would otherwise be wasted. I want to use it to charge a bank of 12 V DC batteries wired to be 24 V. My issue is that the compressed air pressure varies slightly to the point that the generator run between...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

Dave - thanks for the questions. The generator and expander are installed and currently power a 500 watt heater. I am happy to clear up and discrepancies or omissions. Just let me know. The well is produced 1200 psi. The pressure is then regulated to 500 psi and is what the expander see...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

Sorry I am not very clear. When I said 100 watts on an average day, I mean that there is a total of 2400 watt hours during an average day From the 12v batteries connected in series. Is there any piece of equipment that would satisfy the bridge rectifier and the voltage regulation that I could...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

***100 Watts on an Average day*** I am confident I will have sufficient power, but I am still struggling with my original question. Ideally with we use the AC generator as it is an easy option. 1) How would I go about using the generator to charge the 12V car battery bank? 2.) Would it be...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

TugboatEng, Sorry - I don't follow. What is the most important question? I am happy to provide as much detail as possible. Currently The batteries only require about 100 watts a day to charge. Most days its about 75W there are one or two days a week where it requires up to 175W. The...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

Thanks again for your input Waross. That makes sense to me. I probably should have started with an automotive alternator. That being said. Do you think this Victron unit could be a solution? If not, what are the potential issues...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

This is on the more expensive side. Thoughts? https://powerstore.com/catalog/product/view/id/885?utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax_Complete_Systems&utm_source=google+adwords&utm_content={ad}&utm_term=&gclid=CjwKCAjwivemBhBhEiwAJxNWN33enwLGDxbNQkftUUcvcOgrLBCPhS9jJKHZMnyJJdnB5PFyfN1JCRoC8A0QAvD_BwE

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

Thanks for the background all. Obviously you have much more experience than me. I should note that I don't plan on doing anything myself. I will hire an electrician. I am on here only to learn. Unfortunately, I am working with an AC generator, but not opposed to switching out in the...

Battery Charging using Variable speed generator

Hi All, I am working to replace an on-site diesel generator that currently charges a bank (9) of 12V car batteries. The batteries mostly power measurement devices on location. I am hoping to replace the diesel generator with an expander/generator combination that uses on-site natural gas as...

Device that Data Logs Generator Output?

Catserveng - I received a quote from Accuenergy, unfortunately their specs aren't quite what I need. The lowest measurable frequency is 45Hz. The generator I am wanting to monitor is variable speed depending on the prime mover. Do you have any other recommendations that I could look into?

Device that Data Logs Generator Output?

Thanks Catserveng. That looks like a great solution.

Device that Data Logs Generator Output?

Thanks Hoxton and Tugboat. Both of those solutions might be a little more than I need. It does not seem like either one has wifi built in, but I could be wrong. Another forum suggested this: https://www.victronenergy.com/panel-systems-remote-monitoring/cerbo-gx#pd-nav-thirdimage
