How to design a ledger board

@XR250: You can define orthotropic material easily in FEM.

How to design a ledger board

So I did all the suggested solutions above and one question came up: "The ledger calculations does not address the governing factor which is the stress in the ledger perpendicular to grain at the bolt location" Any idea about that? I can use the FEM to find the stress perpendicular to the...

How to design a ledger board

phamENG- Got it. Great info and many thanks. I will look at the expression also.

How to design a ledger board

The structure is an offices inside a building and the drawing shows the roof of the offices. The building already exists. The issue here is not "design the bolts"; which is simple. The issue here is what is the suitable size of the ledger board itself. See how the state of stress is...

How to design a ledger board

For the bolt shown above, I used the NBC table: Again, this building does not satisfy part 9 of the code. That is where I am stuck.

How to design a ledger board

@jayrod12 It is clear for designing the bolts (to resist shear) but what about the bord itself? Do I design the bord for bending and shear between anchorages as a continuous or simply supported? Should I do FEM analysis for this case as the stress will be complicated due to the geometry?

Dowels between new and existing foundation

@EireChch No basement but there is a crawling space and it is a one-story house that was built in the 80s. @Brad805: The piles were chosen on an assumption that they will limit settlement better compared to strip footings.

How to design a ledger board

Is there any resource where it shows how to design a ledger board? The problem is that I am having a commercial building that does not satisfy part 9 (NBC 2015) and should be designed according to part 4 but there is nowhere in the code that specifies the requirement of the ledger board except...

Dowels between new and existing foundation

@CELinOttawa Does the "No to mixing" mean I should use a strip foundation? If we rely on the fact that the existing foundation has been settled over time and the fact that a shallow foundation(strip foundation of existing building) means more settlement/movement compared to a deep foundation...

Dowels between new and existing foundation

@BAritired No. it is on a strip foundation

Dowels between new and existing foundation

Hi I have to design an addition to one story home building. The new foundation is pile type with an 8" foundation wall. The questions I am having now are: Do I need to specify dowels between the new and existing foundation. Does the code specify any guides about that?
