JAE - that's exactly my view of the situation. I am viewing what I did as a "technical staff" job. I took the time to drive out to site, took pictures and documented the conditions that i was instructed to document and brought back to my boss for him to look at and guide me through the document...
AZPete - i have called multiple times trying to get any information and they just simply say that they have received my required response letter and no further information will be provided to me until a decision has been made. So i have no idea how far along they are in the process or if they...
I will update everyone once I receive an outcome. It has been a month so far. No decision has been made by the board yet. Thanks for all your responses. Please use this as a reminder to explain this dilemma to the new engineers you come across.
This is all helpful information. From now on I am going to take the advice given here and add (PA) to my signature and business card and make sure my name is not on anything in other states (to avoid any issues). Now i'm just venting, but i'm upset because I told my boss that my name should not...
Help me understand this. If someone goes up to John Doe and asks him to look at their foundation and write a report with what john sees when he does the observation - does he need to be an engineer? does he need to seal the report? if he's not an engineer, is he not allowed to write a document...
phamENG - That's what I was afraid of. At this firm, almost zero of the reports going out ever had a signature and seal. Wasn't my decision, I was just a worker bee. I was also not the one directing the project or making the key decisions. Interestingly enough, I actually advocated multiple...
In Short: I wrote a site observation report for a site in a state that i'm not licensed in (but my boss is), my boss approved the report, we sent it out to the builder, and the homeowner submitted a complaint that i was practicing engineering without a license. my boss's name and my name are...
PhamENG - interesting! I’m in residential in the northeast and that’s the way I’ve seen it set millions of times (I know that doesn’t mean it’s right - but that’s where my assumption came from). Maybe that method is only okay for standard sill plate settings (not a moment frame or steel column...
This is poor workmanship. Agree with phamENG, the anchors are worthless. neat trick to get the placement correct by putting them through a piece of wood. This looks like they just forgot to set the anchor bolts, as opposed to this being their standard method of setting them. This is a no brainer...
yes i was worried someone would say this. do you know of any references i can look at to learn more about this in order to analyze the condition accurately? i don't recall if NDS talks about the tension perpendicular to grain like this condition.
Yeah, no chance I’d ever risk my license and entire career on something that could eat me alive in court - like saying something is installed per the plans and specifications when it doesn’t meet the assumptions to my specifications (things be installed in the correct orientation, etc.)
i'm still learning how to use this site, but i'm attempting to reply to XR250 directly, haha!
thank you for the feedback. i'll keep this in mind and now realize that my notch exceeds the 1/4, per my most recent comment :(
as i'm looking at my screen shot more, i'm noticing the line of my rafter notch is actually taken at the top right corner of the beam, not the top left....so really, my rafter notch is greater than 1/4 rafter depth. If this still works for the shear at the reaction, am I good or do i need to...
My question is, if i keep the rafter notch to less than 1/4 the rafter depth, can i apply the birdsmouth as illustrated in my screen shot rather than lifting the rafter so that it intersects with the corner of the beam. i assume i will need to check to make sure the shear stil works for the...
xkcstructural, in my experience that is NOT normal. i have been in residential for a while and we would be asked ALL THE TIME to write letters saying everything is okay. If things were wrong we would NOT say that it was installed per the drawings but we WOULD calculate it and say if the...
I don’t do much custom concrete design like this, mainly wood framed residential. Would anyone be willing to share detailed calculations with me, possibly with notes on where formulas and values are found in code. I’m trying to learn as much as I can!
