Industrial bldgs. have less of an occupant load than would a church or a theatre let's say. I would think that these requirements do not apply. Why not call your local building department and ask to speak to the architectural plan examiner?

You need to be more specific. There are steel handbooks available both in USA and Canada (and elsewhere) that list all avail. sections of beams along with their load carrying capacities.
Is there a particular beam size you had in mind ?
