Engineer-Teacher combo here. My career has definitely caused some issues in our marriage. The major ones have involved:
+ Traveling
+ Work hours
+ Need to move in order to find work
+ Resentment toward me when I *assume* she doesn't know much about science and technology. Objectively, she...
Having been born on October 10, I'm planning a big birthday party on 10/10/10, perhaps from 10:10 am until 10:10 pm.
On 7/7/7 we'll be celebrating the birthdays of my sister and brother (Yes, starting at 7:07...)
Sadly, my mom passed away just three weeks before she could celebrate her...
Well stated, professor Scordelis.
Thanks for the post, Heckler.

As mentioned, the clearance is valuable for certain companies in that it saves time and money on the company's part as well as reducing the potential risk that you'd be ineligible.
However, unless you've got the skill set that they're looking for, it's basically useless.
If you're going after...
I echo Mike Halloran's comments -- he's only doing what he's been told is what you're supposed to do. I've always been skeptical of the "in-your-face" approach but have heard some on these boards cite some success with various forms of it.
If you can stomach the idea, you might consent to...
It sounds like the SP update is the obvious answer to the problem. I wouldn't expect any help from the VAR nor SWX until you've done that.
Rather than wasting time getting old machines set up to run the earlier release you should be getting your current deployment up to date.
So he'd rather...

I think you're misjudging the situation but I suspect that nothing I say will change your view so further comment is a waste of time and space.
Cheers.

Face-to-face is definitely the preferred method for such things. Keep it light and casual.

SomptingGuy: I haven't seen too many examples of Americans heading overseas to take jobs in Europe and I certainly didn't run into any during my months working in the Netherlands servicing our equipment.
Certainly American corporations may be using some folks from their stateside offices just...
Where's the hypocrisy?
By all means, every country should exhaust its own work force before considering allowing folks from other countries to come take the existing jobs.
If there's a shortage in a given area, the answer is training and wage increase, not importation of cheaper foreign labor...
I'd just go in and say, "Hey boss, I was wondering when I should expect the increase to show in my pay check?"

Wonderful...just what we need.
There's no shortage of engineers. Perhaps there's a shortage of engineers who are cheap but possessing the exact experience someone wants with the exact set of specialized skills.
No, let's not provide advanced training. No, let's not hire anybody over 45. No...

Of course, I'm presently out of work with no immediate prospects so fat lot of good it does me now...

I, for one, have decided to get out of engineering if I can. I find out in July if I've been accepted into the grad school program that will make it reality.
I'm just tired of the boom/bust cycles. I've survived many more layoffs than I've "flunked" but even those have taken an emotional toll...
Good grades can get you into some great companies that you'll have a tough time hooking up with later on unless you come from one of their competitors who are also very grade conscious.
Regarding school reputation, it seems to be mostly an issue of who comes for on-campus interviews for...
I'll bet you'll come to rue his words.
Your PHB should keep in mind that said machinist's interest in adequately training a replacement will drop off exponentially as the day of his departure gets nearer and nearer (or is he figures out the exorbitant rate he might earn later as a contractor)...
Nothing more valuable for the company, that is.
For the employee, the best bet is keep it all to himself and then charge $125/hr to come back as a contractor to help his replacement get things figured out for himself.

I'd highly recommend you get some experience at another company before you join your family's business. You will be better for it and so will your company. Family businesses can often end up short sighted because of lack of external exposure and experience.

I learned the basics of the 315-2DP programming and implementation using the Berger books, the Siemens online help, and their tech support line.
I'd also highly recommend PLCSIM, both for learning and for debugging your programs before you load them into the hardware.
Also, do some digging...
