    Discrete Manufacturing

MaxBreizh - this is the first I've heard about Poka-Yoke. I really like the example you cited. Simple and effective. I'm going to study the subject further, so thanks! Now, for the rest of the gang who's contributed so far. It wasn't my goal to initiate a "who runs the most difficult shop"...

    Discrete Manufacturing

Lean manufacturing is easy! There. I said it. I am not an expert in Lean, or any related theories or disciplines. I don't deny the benefit of Lean practices or Continuous Improvement. I'm just locked in the bitter barn when it comes to Lean because, in general, it just doesn't apply to my...

How to get around sanding casting iron before machining?

Every surface is rough, as cast. The castings are delivered on the large side of the finished tolerance. The sanding merely being performed to get me parallel reference surfaces for work-holding in the mill. I'm not familiar with a double disc grinder. We have a grinder but are using the...

How to get around sanding casting iron before machining?

Hello - We've got a job for 5,000+ iron hinges, which we're machining from ductile iron castings. We've been belt sanding them, one at a time, to get a flat surface before the machining starts. This sanding is incredibly time consuming and costly. I'm not a machinist, but I understand we've...

    MIL-PRF-38201D

My company has dealt with Uncle Sam for over 30 years. I would really recommend you get ahold of your mil-specs before you quote. If you bid an item, you're effectively agreeing to their requirements on that item. Langdon - is your firm ISO? do you have a MIL-I-45208 plan in place? Does...

undewhelming guys - really - well - if you want something done right... Here's what I found in terms of viewers that handle all the good formats: 1) Trix Systems Drawing Center 5 - mid range price, lot's of nice features, optional features (costs more) allows for mark up. A doc management...

Curved material - drill holes before or after bending?

Thanks to those who commented. Since the holes were already drilled on hundreds on these parts, I had no choice but to move ahead and hope for the best. It turned out alright. There was negligable deformation of the holes after bending, so the parts meet the customer requirements. -rob

Let's talk about digital image viewers...

I just want to put out a probe for any suggestions on a good versatile image viewer. Any suggestions? Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 different file formats which Uncle Sam seems to like using as a medium for digital drawings and specs: (1) .img (2) .c4 (3) .dwg (4) .cal I'm not...

Curved material - drill holes before or after bending?

Part of an assembly I'm working on is a curved/arc sheet. Per my design prints, there are three holes positioned at different angles of the arc. I'm sure that I could put the holes in after the sheets have been formed, but I have several to do, and it would be much more labor intensive...
