1. Lack of understanding of what an Engineer can provide.
2. The refusal to try to understand what an Engineer can provide.
3. 40 non-engineers doing design work and then asking me to fix all of their screw ups after the customer has the product.
4. Management supporting and encouraging the 40...
It was common knowledge at the first company that I worked for that in order to become an upper level manager (department head on up), that you had to have a lobotomy before accepting the promotion.
As I experience more and more management teams, I am starting to wonder if this isn't some...
What most non-engineers do not understand is that garbage in = garbage out. If you do not know where to begin, then you are lost before you even get started.
Unfortunately, I believe that it will take more than one tradegy to stop the practice of allowing unqualified people design structures.
Maybe I should have been more specific.
Dictionary.com defines
ethic - "A set of principles of right conduct." "A theory or a system of moral values"
ethics - "The rules or standards governing the conduct of a person or the members of a profession"
ethics - "The study of the general...
Food for thought. I have seen ethics used in several different contexts, but generally meaning the same things. What is your definition of the word ethics? What rules of thumb to you use to apply ethics?
My definition is: a set of guidelines based on values (personal and professional) that...
I agree with DrillerNic that corporations are a direct reflection of the living people who direct and lead the corporation. I believe that corporate ethics begin at the top and filter down to the rest of the company. The corporation's ethics directly reflects those of its leaders and decision...
To what level does the company you currently work for and/or companies you have worked for in the past adhere to their stated ethical standards?
I have found that the two companies I have worked for adhere to their ethics only when it is convenient and relatively painless. One company was a...
Expectation breeds more expectation. If you start regularly putting in 50 hours a week, your boss will get used to it and begin to expect you to put in 50 hours or more a week. If you decide to work a standard 40 or 45, then your are not meeting expectations. If you are expected to put in...
Scott's website is mentioned as "One of the best sites I found" for new tricks in SolidWorks in Desktop Engineering's most recent issue.
Below is the website the article is located.

Congratulations Scott.
Where can I find some general guidelines or a table that gives the different sizes of an expansion joint at different ambient temperatures in an open air concrete structure? I suspect that it will vary with slab thickness, size of structure between joints, type of concrete construction, etc...
Do you have any dimensions or relations that relate your sketch to the origin? If you do not relate the position of your sketch to the origin (or another sketch that is already related to the origin), Solidworks assumes the sketch is floating in space.
Getting a PE is like getting an Engineering Degree or any other higher education degree. You have to really want to get it in order for it to be "worth it". It should be something that you do for yourself, not others.
If you do not want to get a PE, then it is not worth the additional effort...
Great thread.
Right out of college I worked with an older engineer that told me "The first two or three times you change jobs you change for idealistic reasons (to get away from politics, better morals, better ethics, etc.), but after that you find out that every company is the same except they...
Sounds like a great situation to get out of. I was in a similar situation with an aircraft company. I was a member of the MRB for the aircraft company and spent about 85% of my time fighting with production to perform what I thought was the correct repair to a discrepant part. The amount of...
It sounds like you applied a temperature as a load instead of setting it as an initial condition.
If the temperatures are applied to the nodes as a load, then ANSYS will continuously apply the temperatures as a heat source instead of allowing the nodes to decrease in temperature.
Step 10 in...
Our extruder was bought by another company and closed down the plant that made a set of profiles for us. I am trying to find another source to extrude the following material, but have not had any luck. The material is closed cell polychloroprene (neoprene). The extrusion has one hollow in the...
Is it acceptable to weld 6063-T5 aluminum to 5052-H32? I know that typically the -T5 temper will be reduced to the O condition in the heat affected zone; however, I do not know much about welding different alloys of aluminum together. We are using a MIG welder. I do not currently know what...
Depending on how much you want to spend, ANSYS would be a good software package to consider.
My company is currently upgrading from ANSYS Design Space to ANSYS Professional to upgrade our thermal and large deflection analysis capabilities.

Thank you all for your input.
I agree with daveleo. I think it is wise to have a sanity check to help validate your FEA model. In using any type of FEA analysis (thermal or structural) software, garbage in = garbage out.
I will also add thermal radiation into my sanity check.

I am designing an insulative fire blanket to be used in fire rated conditions for commercial buildings. I will run my design through a transient thermal analysis in ANSYS, but I want to use some transient Heat Transfer equations I can set-up in a spreadsheet to help verify my FEA results. I...
